    hi guys,

Im getting a XP hot cam installed soon with all the goodies....pretty sure that cam makes power up to 6500rpm. Is it safe to spin a stock bottom end that high? Otherwise could just tell my tuner to back down to 6200 rpm or so...

    Whats your experiences?

    cheers

I've revved mine that high but wouldn't really recommend it. I'm sticking to 6-6200

its not a buick engine lol its a Chevy technically. they all used the same engine across GM. its your valve springs that will hate you at those rpm's

No its TECHNICALLY a buick engine. Do some research. Designed by buick in the mid sixties. I had an 81 olds with a 231 and an 86 olds with a 455. Almost identical in basic design. Key design/flaw is the oil system which is like no chevy engine ive ever seen. And its technically a gmcorporate engine if your wanting to play that card. Try again[ QUOTE=Scottydoggs;1174859]its not a buick engine lol its a Chevy technically. they all used the same engine across GM. its your valve springs that will hate you at those rpm's[/QUOTE]

you talking the 80's, olds Buick Pontiac and Chevy were all still a bit different, most common things that were different looking was the intake manifold, the timing cover and the water pump.

olds Pontiac and Buick all looked similar, (not the same at all) and Chevy was way different.

once the 90's hit they all used one engine pretty much across the board, aka the Chevy engine.

note how the same l67 is in impalas, montie's, regals, riviera's, gtps, park abe ultras, and bonnies. they all use the same engine

Yeah and chevy was the last to get them. Its like saying a duramax is not a diesel cause its in a chev. After tearing apart a bunch of l67s i noticed the disassembly and design is nearly identical to my 231

Stick with a shift rpm of 6,000, the motor will spin to 6200ish before it shifts.

Make sure your valvetrain can handle it.

Personally with the proper valve train setup I would run an XP setup to 6500 rpm.

anything over 6300 to 6500 scares me. what are you really gaining with the few more rpm's?

An XP cam is a higher powerband cam. Revving up high is where that cam really makes good power.

valve train shouldnt be a problem... 130lbs springs, modded retainers and valve stem seals, double row timing chain. And my transmission is fully built... has been putting up with over 400 ft/lbs at 2800 rpm since i got the a2a cooler last year
