i change mine at 25% left
I go 4000 with synthetic. I don't rely on the oil meter. My fuel mileage and gallons used is always off so I am sure my oil meter is too. No since in relying on it when it is cheap to change the oil.
I use the cheapest oil auto zone is selling at the time of the change. every 3k. if you rely or even think of relying on that oil meter you are an idiot (sorry OP)
I use Mob 1 syn 5/30 and I always try to change mine at 3k mark and have went to 3500.My oil % at that time is around 50%-45% mark. I was always told its cheaper to change your oil then a motor!
i do mobil 1 synthetic and a ac delco oil filter or mobil one filter every 3-4k
All:
Agreed that we should do what we are comfortable with in the long run.
This being said, it is very true that both oil and engine technology have grown in leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. Having been around vehicles that see extended idling time as well as extreme driving throughout their lives, the big thing is to use a good quality oil and fillter. I would never run "just what is on sale" unless the vehicle in question burns oil like a sieve, or is a beater.
As long as you follow the intervals in the owners manual, your engine should live a long and happy life. I like the Mobil 1 because of the cold winters we have here in Ohio. Motorcraft makes a very nice semi-synthetic oil for a good price.
I drive around 10k miles yearly, and was doing my oil /filter every 4mo/4k. If BMW,Corvette, and Mercedes, etc say you can run good oil as long as your monitor tells you, then it is ok.
Oil and filters are cheaper than a motor, but think of the mods or beer, etc you can buy with the money saved. The overall effect on the environment is positive as well.
FWIW......YMMV........Don

I run Mobil1 10W-30 with a Purolator PL10111 filter, for 2 years I've changed the oil when the monitor reached 0, about 6500 miles, comes out with a brown color.
Considering my finger was dirtier than my valve cover when I took it off, absolutely no sludge, I say my way is working just fine.

i wouldn't go by the monitor. My buddy that works at a chevy dealership said that he had a guy come in for an oil change because his change oil light came on and it had been 20,000 miles since his last oil change!!
According to the service records recorded in the owner manual of my car, the oil was changed in intervals between 4-7k miles, with 6k being the average miles between oil changes, since the car was new. The brand of oil is not recorded, I assume it is just regular stuff.
The biggest engine repair that has been done are the LIM gaskets, and I did those
at 143k.
Now at 160k, it still run silky smooth, no noises, no major leaks, hauls ass,
(crossed fingers), and uses about 8oz between changes (I change at 3k w/filter)
and its not all that black either.
i always change oil at 3000 to 3500 miles, i don't use the dic, my 03 truck's wouldn't tell you its time till after 5000, miles.
i just changed the oil in the regal after only 1500 miles and it was dirty already, all black and chit, and stinky. and i had lost a few quarts along the way with a oil pressure sensor leaking. so it already had 1/2 a change before the change.
so my guess is the last owners of this car didn't know what a oil change was.
