Greetings everyone. I'm the proud longtime owner of a 2004 GTP who's been my baby since 2008. Unfortunately, ever since I could remember, I've had a surging/sputtering/bucking problem with her that's been worsening over the years.

I first noticed it as a proper concern back in 2012, where a fairly steep hill was on my path to work. Going up the hill at normal speeds, the accelerator would feel slightly unresponsive as I would have to push it fairly far down before it would downshift and work its way up. Before it would shift (although not in-between or hunting for a gear imho) it would buck a bit and surge before letting off and reengaging the accelerator and everything would be peachy. "It's getting up there in the years," I thought. "Probably needs a new fuel filter or something but oh well no worries for now!" Other than that, I continued to race around like your average GTP owner on flat surfaces until the past year or so.

Now more recently it happens everywhere regardless of conditions, ONLY in a hard acceleration and especially on WOT. It doesn't matter if its pinned from a stop, driving down the street, or cruising on the highway - you can hear the whine sputter in and out and many times the speed moves up at a crawl if i'm lucky. Here's a quick example on video. You can usually just power out of it especially if you ease into the pedal in the low end. But at higher speeds, even with a light foot, it's pretty likely to happen. But that's the thing: some days it acts much better or like a completely brand new car. For example, here's another video of a hard acceleration (increasing to WOT) where it sounds and acts like it should. That was taken around the same time as the previous one. Average day to day driving is pitch perfect EXCEPT if I have to get onto a highway, pass someone, or bolt my way into heavy traffic.

Okay so here's the hard details: This issue started and has gotten worse before I started swapping out parts but for good measure: I have a open cone filter, flipped top motor mounts, and a 180 thermostat. Those have mainly been thrown on to combat some heating issue paranoia the car has had over the years (works great btw).

I've taken it into a trusted shop and together we've checked out/replaced to no avail:
    - Spark plugs+wires (once in 2013 by a different shop, and 2015)
    - Coil packs are reading normal
    - EGR Valve seems good
    - Fixed a couple small vac leaks + all s/c vac lines
    - Fuel trims are "surprisingly right on the money" considering its age
    - Replaced fuel filter
    - Replaced BBV
    - Replaced PCV valve
    - Fuel pressure ok and injectors are good
    - Cleaned throttle body
    - MAF reading normal
    - O2 sensors working and cat is flowing good

After some of the vacuum work, the problem has subsided randomly throughout the day. Yesterday I took it for a spirited drive down the highway. Going on the onramp it accelerated like I've never seen before. I would be cruising and just randomly WOT for the fun of it. I turned around and went to pick my friend up to show it to him (hadn't been turned off at all) and getting back on the highway it was crapping out again.

Now my tech looks at me like I'm crazy when I show up for a test drive and it acts normal even though it was sputtering on the drive over! He says everything checks out and doesn't want me to throw money at the wall anymore . He did say the ICM could be wonky - not broken but just screwy where it may get too hot and start messing up under load. But I'm tired of replacing stuff on a crapshoot. I've scoured forums such as these for years trying to figure it out, I would really appreciate some assistance in restoring my baby back to where she belongs! I hope the videos will help simulate what I'm talking about as well.

That's a torque converter symptom to me. When you let off the throttle it unlocked the converter. I'm not saying it's bad but that is known to happen as it struggles "climb" up the grade or in rpm and kinda fights it.

Also, you had the check engine light on. What are the codes saying?

Cat seems to be fine! It's been checked out. No fuel economy issues and its passed all emissions since the problem began

During my various searches I've seen the TCC come up now and then but I thought that was more of a consistent problem and not an intermittent "whenever I feel like it" one like it is now. Doesn't that usually come up in 3/OD as well? I'm not sure that's just what I've gathered from my research into the problem but there are no other issues with the car otherwise.

Ah, I forgot to put that in. It's for the p0300 random misfire. If I don't let it power out of the sputtering and I just hold it in (sounds god-awful), it will usually misfire and flash the cel. I'm trying to get it to specify the cylinder so I just leave it on so it can collect more misfires. Using torque with the OBII though, the misfire history is all over the place with the cylinders. Sometimes one has 400, one has 0, one has 6. Then after clearing it the order changes. It doesn't always misfire though, it's fairly rare unless I really ride it hard on the surge.

I'd find anyone else you know with a 3800 and swap ICM's, because you have a random misfire.

Damn, I'd really like it to be that so I could just swap it out and be done with it all. Aren't ICM issues usually more severe? Or can they really just short here and there and throw a miss when it's hot like my mechanic said? It's a small chance like he said but there's nothing else in the chain of firing that has the potential to be a faulty electrical component at this point I guess.

ICM's can be good and bad at the same time is the problem. You could test it and have it pass but then throw it back on the car and be in the same problem again, then take it back out and it could test good again. Sometimes it depends on heat or the load put on it. You are asking way more from it when you give it the beans, it's working faster and harder to supply the coils.

Sometimes they show cracks or burns and othertimes not. That why I say to just swap one real fast and see if the issues go away.

Yeah that seems like the case, hopefully. I don't know anyone near me with a 3800 and a call to the local used/junk parts place proved less than fruitful ($225 for a used ICM!). Unfortunately the GT1 I just got is purportedly showing the same symptoms so I can't risk using that one. So I just ordered one from ZZP which is the cheapest I can find plus shipping. If it doesn't work I guess I'll chock it up to something I haven't thought of or a TCC/general transmission issue.

If it ships before I leave for the holidays with any luck I'll report back with good news. Thanks for the help so far!

Following! Mine has the same issues. It "surges" a few hundred rpms under load below 2,000 rpm. Perfectly fine at cruise, though.

Damn. I assumed you've been through similar checks as I have? Thankfully it looks like UPS is set to have it arrive by tomorrow!

I'll be honest with you. I haven't really looked into much as I don't even know where to start. I'm at 175,000 miles so guess it could be anything. Start with the basics, I guess.

Ah, check through the things I did beforehand just in case. Those are usually the easiest and cheapest things firsthand. I will say going through and replacing all the things I did improved the car overall anyways, regardless of its actual affect on the real problem.

Anywhoo, got the ZZP ICM on thursday; Fairly fast shipping considering the customs fees and import blah blah (which really hit the wallet hard btw). Took me a few days to get to putting it on because I first didn't have a socket small enough to undo the 6 bolts (6mm) and THEN I needed an extension for the new wrench I bought because it was too big to reach the 3 bolts on the right side of the coils.

Other than that it installed in a breeze in 5 minutes and started up pretty strong. Left the battery unhooked for a day before going out for a "spirited" drive and so far everything's pretty swell. I'll have to take it around for a bit longer though before I come to a real conclusion since the issue comes and goes depending on random factors. I will say it shifts like butter going down city streets and cruise controls up hills better than ever. Cold/Warm starts sound exactly the same and right on the money the few times I did it. The old ICM also looked a bit....burnt to say the least. The whole area under there was pretty dirty despite how tight the coils are pressed down onto it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was at least a little bit messed up somehow.

Dustinss, if you can grab one cheap enough, new or used, I'd recommend throwing one on if you feel like gambling. If anything just to replace something that's probably gonna burn out eventually anyway. As long as you check out some of the easier stuff first of course.
