Another one of those guess that noise thread. Bill/Scotty ready..set...go....

04 87k, vs cam, 90lb, stock timing chain, heads were cleaned and decked. SD headers, lq4, ls7 lifters etc AL 104 gapped at .50. Stock pushrods

Decided to go ahead and get the car on the road again. I had a massive exhaust leak as well as what I thought was a bad lifter tick. I tried the seafoam trick.. Still was there. Tried some Lucas in the oil.. Still had this ticking. Decided to go ahead and pull the SDs and modify them since I needed to replace the crappy Felpro gaskets. I also went ahead and changed the lifters thinking one may of collapsed. Pulled the lifters and they all appeared fine but I went ahead and changed them. Finished the SDs and installed them back (no more exhaust leak) but ticking noise is still apparent and I'm having a hard time pinpointing where it is. Rockers were torqued and none of them appear loose.

First video was before I fixed the leak and with my old stock lifters. (Ignore the belt squeak)

    Today's video

    Already checked the basics
    -no cel
-plugs changed and old plugs were fine
    -oil changed and no glitter
-doesn't seem bottom end related seems to quite down when I idle it around 2k or so. Will have to double check once I have a buddy that's free
-I tried the old screwdriver trick and still can't seem to pinpoint it but it does sound more apparent from the front of the motor then the rear.

I'm open to suggestion. I don't remember how much the heads were decked but it was just enough to clean them up. I haven't ruled out maybe the pushrods are to long just yet but rather double check here and get some suggestion before I order the tool.

I'm not hearing enough in the vid to realize which noise you are talking about. About the only thing I might be hearing is a slight misfire. Which.. with the cam, 0300 should be disabled. Check plug wire order to ensure two aren't backwards. Beyond that..I'm just not hearing enough.

yup P0300 is disabled, I do believe I'm getting a slight misfire.. Wires are in the correct position. Plugs are new.. I'll do have to make sure the injectors are seated correctly and switch them around if necessary.Rev video should come later today if my buddies free to stop by for a bit.

You sure on those plug wires? There's a couple you can swap up and have a similar sound. Just saying.. it's happened to me.

and on the coils.. 1/4 interchangeable, 2/5 inter, 3/6 inter. Cause.. both towers fire at the same time.

Do you have a spark tester?

For the coilpacks. I had a spark tester but either I let some borrow it or misplaced it but I'll grab one from HF today.

Bumping this back up I got a little bit of time this week to work on it. I did grab another spark tester from HF when I was in town. What exactly should I be checking for BB?

vid with a rev would help. hold it at 2500 rpm, then let it drop to idle.

could be a exhaust leak too. look for a black soot covered flange off the headers to heads, or the cross over and such.

sea foam would show it if you cant seem to find a leak area.

I'll try to grab a video tomorrow if my brother is free for a bit. I'm almost positive that I have zero exhaust leaks but I won't rule that out. Flanges are clean as a whistle.

No need to hold.. If I ask for a quick rev.. it's a stab the throttle and instantly let off. See...that's the most indisputable way to hear a bad lower end.

Spark tester.. each coil tower to see if each one is firing. The little I could hear, made me thing wires were flipped or one tower wasn't firing.

Lmk if the videos doesn't work.

-Each coil is firing up just fine.
-Flexplate appears to be just fine from looking up at it from the inspection cover I see no cracks.
-Noise is more apparent from the front of the vehicle and almost sounds like its coming from aronf the front head/sc area.

id pop the vc off. kinda sounds like rocker or a valve not opening. could be a broken spring or a bent push rod. easy enough to check out.

i guess who ever was holding the gas couldn't hear ya say cut it off the first two times huh? lol
