I had an issue with the top end of the engine not getting oil. Amongst other issues, turns out the oil pump gear and housing was all grooved up from grit passing through it. After that happens, it cannot build the pressure necessary to pick up the oil from the oil pan. I also think the oil regulator/spring was stuck.
