So today i replaced my a/c compressor and dryer and i was going to replace the orfice tube but it was a pita so i said eff it for today. I was reading and someone said something about vacuumin the a/c system after it has been open and before you put r134a in. I havent added any yet but i was wondering if i would have to vacuum the system and how can i do it myself.

I also seen something about using a paper clip to override a/c solwnoid to force the clutch to engage to fill the system....anyone heard of or done this?

your supposed to vac out the system before you open up any seals, unless it was completely empty already, after you finish up, you just need to recharge the system.
not sure you would want to run the compressor with out refrigerant in it, when filling it it will turn on all by its self, start car, turn a/c on to max, and fill it up, the compressore will turn on all by its self when its ready to. unless you have other issues to deal with.

If the system has been opened you'll need to have it vacuumed out. You can buy a vacuum pump and do it yourself if you want.

Ok thanks I didn't figure the paperclip thing was a good idea but i wasn't sure. And do you know where I could find a vacuum pump and how much do you think they cost?

Its called a vacuum pump you'll have to buy a set of ac gauges too though to use with it.

How hard was replacing the compressor ? Any tips ? Mine is throwing oil so I imagine the seals are shot.
Can I be lucky and just change some o-rings ? proly not,

I did mine at the same time as my headers so it only took about 20 min. Never done one other than that though.

and i would suggest that unless you see it coming straight from the compressor just try replacing the o ring first and if that dont work then you should replace the o rings anyways so its not like you would be wasting any money.

Looks like the oil is coming out the front, clutch area of the compressor. I will crawl under and see if the hoses are leaking also.
Oil is being slung out like it is being spun by the clutch. If it was the hoses would it be more towards the back of the comp ?

One more question which side is the high side and which is the low? Which side do i fill?

its pretty easy. i bought a used one and the guy sent it with the rear bracket so that was one less bolt i had to take off. you could take the braket off and put it on your new one before you reinstall. I went through the bottom by taking all the plastic bs off and i also went through the wheel well. a long extension works good for the three bolts on front. and deep sockets are a good thing cuz the bolts on mine were to long to fit a shallow socket over

Yeah you need to vacuum the system for at least 30 min to get any moisture out. Yes you can do it with out putting a vacuum on the system, but you air wont blow as cold.

Always fill on the low side. The ports are different so you cant mess it up.

im not sure but i would suggest a new compressor over a new clutch cuz its not that much difference and you dont have to worry about messing anything up

i got a vacuum pump from harbor frieght but im not sure what kinda hose is needed or where i could find one. I'm thinking i will have to make one if anyone knows what conections i would need.

^^^this is the pump i got btw and i got a conection for the air compressor to hook up to the machine just not the machine to the car

I remember using my gauges to connect it to the car. I think the size that hooks up is the same as the tank hookup on the HF gaugeset.
