Hi, I've had this problem for some time, it involved a big mess under my dash. Basically the questions im asking are as follows:

    1. where does the Gauges (AKA. Pillar Gauges) on the left hand side on a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP go? i mean the wiring was messed up and wondering which wires are to connect what... no clue where to connect them to, if any help please.

    2. speedometer wire that connects on the bottom of it to light it up is messed up, where is this connected to so that it lights up etc... please let me know.

    thanks.

    there is two different problems.

    one is the pillar gauges.

    one is the speedometer.

    sorry for the mistake.

the pillar gauges, dont work, connection was lost, and not sure where to reconnect the wire/wires.

as for the speed o meter, same thing, not sure where its connected to so that it will light at night etc..

Ah.....as for the guage pods, it depends on which guages are in there. And for the instrument cluster (speedo, tac, etc.), are all the bulbs out? If so, I'd check your fuses in your glove box and make sure none are blown...or it could be the bulbs are blown and you can easily access and replace those from the back of the cluster. Im not sure what you mean by " the wire that connects on the bottom of it" unless you have an overlay.

Okay, so basically there is the speedo, on the bottom of the speedo there is a wire that is connected to it, has a like black square type connector on the end of it, where does that wire connect to, ? i my lights that work for like my ABS etc... those work, its just the ones that in the night time you know, that bright up so i can see how fast im going, and not take a guess lol.

and as far as the cluster goes, its the stock ones, one says air/fuel ratio, the other is a voltage ratio. which was in the car already and i know its stock, but not sure where it is to be connected.

now back to the fuzes, dont suppose to you the name of them off hand to check those too ? while im at it.

Okay..thats a gauge overlay. It is a piece that is set overtop of your actual gauge cluster. (I have the same one) The wire that drops from that piece goes to another connector that should be wired into the switch (where you turn your headlights on). Has this ever worked? If so, how did it become disconnected? More than likely the connector will still be wired up somewhere. But its hard to say where the previous owner wired it.
As for the other gauges youre talking about, if its in your A-pillar (between your driver side door and windshield) those are not stock. The A/F gauge should be connected RED= switched 12v BLACK= ground PURPLE= the o2 sensor. The Voltage gauge RED= switched 12v BLACK= ground. But both are pretty much a light show as they are useless. (unless the A/F gauge is a wideband)

eh far as i know, its pretty helpful because when my fuelpump went, it was showing on my A/F gauge, and when it showed poor mix, my car shut off from it lol. but could be a lucky type thing that i looked or w/e.

    ANYHOW.
so yes my overlay did work before, maybe i snagged a wire somehow??? lets say i did, eh would it be hard to rewire to a different spot? i mean you know how? or would it be hard to describe in steps for me?

also, as far as the guages go, (its located on the left side, by the windshield on the pillar, like between the windshield and the door i guess just like you said....

you said about the wiring, where would it go again ??? im dumb

Ok, lets start from the when this problem started. If it did work before, how might it have gotten snagged? Were you workin on anything under the dash? And apparently the gauges work too, did this problem occur at the same time?

no one happened, than the other happened after, i was working on my stereo, i think its something to do with where they wired that at, and i think when i took my dash peice out i hit the wire for the overlay as welll....

i think they wired my gauge clusters into my radio some how

Wow...Its probably gonna be easier to just rewire everything than to try and chase that gremlin down. As for the overlay, the other end of the connector is in there somewhere....you just gotta find where they wired it.

I usually wire everything through my ignition wires which are easy to get to right under the dash. But if you dont know what your looking for...a lot of people like to run the wires over to the fuse box in the glove box. I would start with your fuses in your glove box, check them and make sure none are blown. Your gauge problem may be as simple as that. For the overlay, though, the other half of it is still wired in somewhere and you'll need to look for the other half of the connector. Somewhere under your dash. You will need to remove the "knee basher" (remove the two screws and pull it off) to get a better look.

lol..only 1600 miles. Is there an alarm/remote start installed? If not, it should be pretty simple under there. Unless, there are other things like underglows or some other electronics goin on in there. For the gauges, they only needed two lines running under there, a switched 12v and a constant 12v.

this is the problem. i took it out, so what you were saying is that this is to the over lay, the cables are good except i dont know where to connect the 4 cables, noted. 2 pos and 2 neg.

as far as the gauges go, you were right they are not stock, and was put in there, so i took them out, and i need to figure out how to put the back in, they are *Fuze*. although be hard to describe over this. besides that it was a major cluster #*$*# under my dash, if u had e-mail id show you what i mean HAHA
