Okay.. so after breaking my IAT sensor, I found that the hole that I have the IAT sensor sitting in is 5/8 inches. That's just the diameter of the IAT sensor, cause I don't have a grommet around it and just drilled a hole in the pcv.

i just have a hole drilled in mine, and to top it off we put a little high temp silicone around it. apparantly part of it wasnt sealed off totally, so for a little bit my car whistled like a little turbo was in there

I know this thread is older but I built one of these intakes today and everyone is right, they are insanely loud. I think this is partly caused because inside the tubing there's a slight ridge which I'm going to try sanding down to see if it that helps to smooth it out. Also I didn't drill the hole for IAT so it would be vertical, would that have any effect on it working properly?

GM got lazy and drilled holes and used freeze plugs to create the IAC holes in the TB so they're not designed with noise reduction in mind.

    even through hitachi made them?

Well yeah but I can't imagine that ridge makes it any better lol. It almost sounds like a horrible grinding noise and it's kinda funny

No I'm talking about a little ridge on the inside of the pvc pipe that comes from when they mold it, I'm not gonna mess with anything that's from the factory unless I'm paying a professional to do it, at least as far as grinding and removing metal is concerned.

no idea what you're talking about.

the IAC system is all in the TB, it has sharp 90* bends which causes noise.

nothing you can do about it.

It's inside the PVC pipe where the ridge is it's caused from how the pipe itself is molded. I'm not talking about anything in the TB or anything like that, just the pipe used to make the intake.

You can try a PVC pipe that has no ridge, instead of sanding the one you have.

To be honest, every intake I've made is loud. I think it's the fact that you have more air going to it. I made an intake with all smooth piping (no ridge) on my old gt, and it's just as loud.

Well yeah I figure I'll try it anyway, I work in an aluminum factory deburring motor parts all day so it's almost like an OCD thing that I gotta have it smooth haha. After I drove it for a bit it didn't seem to be quite as loud anymore, either way it sounds sick and I'm definitely glad I did this cheap mod, I'll be takin a picture as soon as I'm done with my cig and post it up on here.

Oh.... you can put the filter right on the throttle body and it'd still make the exact same noise.

its not your intake thats making that noise.

its the IAC valve in the TB itself.

OK, so since you realize this...unless you upgrade TB's that change your IAC sensor and position...you won't get rid of the shovel dragging over concrete sound...until the car warms up that is.

Also, before you ask...upgrading to a different TB is a pointless mod unless your cammed or IC'd and HAVE headers and way to tune the car...

Don't worry I didn't plan on upgrading the TB, I don't mind the noise I really like the fact that it's louder it'll get more peoples attention lol. But those are all things I've got planned to do at some point to my car.

As so many members have, a mandrel bent 4" 16-gauge 45 degree aluminum elbow. 9" K&N, and a 3.5" to 4" coupler. Haven't gotten the IAT sensor all sexily installed yet because I had to finish up the process early.

Looks like a decent spot for the IAT for me.
