When I shut the car off today, the ignition switch wouldn't turn to the key removal position and the "park" indicator in the instrument cluster remained lit up.

I was able to start the engine again, move the gear selector into gear and back in park and the key came out after I shut it off.

Maybe unrelated, but I did run over a snow / ice berm that scraped under the car just before the problem arose. Wassup with that?

    Happy New Year!

did you hear the click when you shifted it into park? Theres a solenoid attached to the gear selector that sometimes goes bad. Could also be an ignition switch going bad. seems to be a common problem with the 97-03s

You're absolutely right and I also found and watched a You Tube video on it. The solenoid in the steering column sounds weak....you can hear it. Any idea what part number the solenoid is, or where I'd find it referenced?
Gonna see if I can find it on a parts website. Sounds easy to replace.

On second thought.... after looking at it, I just put a zip strip around it to hold it closed. Now it won't actuate.

    Done......

    Thanks!

if your not to concerned about having it be original, what i did when mine went out was if you pull the trim off the sterring column, you will see a little plunger sticking down on the ignition cylinder when the car isnt in park. I fed a couple small zip ties up and around and got them to hold the plunger in all the time. Never had a problem with key not coing out again, however the key will come out when the gear lever is in any position. hope this helps you

if your wiper controls are on the directional. thats called a multi switch. all you need to do is make sure its for your year car, and has all the same exact functions as the old one.

junk yard or ebay will be cheaper. new they are not cheap really.

Thanks Scotty,(nice firebird picture)I am told I need a wiper control module, the car has the control on the turn signal. It will sometimes work for a few minutes then start going stedily. Sometime takes a while to fighte out I turned them off too and will, park in the middle of the windshield.

if you take the wiper cowl off, the plastic under the wiper arms, there is a tab that gets bent up and keeps the blades from parking properly.

2002 impala: wipers park..used multifunction switch..same thing help - JustAnswer

while you have the cowl off make sure the wiper motor and wiper transmission is working right, no broken moving parts or bushings.
