Thread: Looking for help with adding fuses(the stock way)

Hey guys,
Looking for some electrical gurus. So what I want to do is to make some of the unused spaces in the interior fuse block. Just want to add 3 or 4 fuses. Please don't respond with information about the power drop below the glove box. I know it's there, but I have more things to hook up than I want to run off of that one circuit. I also don't want to run a bunch of wires off of the engine fuse block power post. I also know about the "add a circuit" circus wiring things, but I don't want that.

Anyway, back to the original request. Do any of you know the process to add in the connectors to the OEM fuse box?

i have no clue how to add to the fuse box, i like to use this things, they are clean and have their own fuse for each item off the fuse block.

i call it add a fuse, thought add a circuit was something else, lol looks like you need mr boost, hes got all the good tricks up his sleeves.

if you had a spare fuse box to steal fuse block parts it may be doable. you know to fill in the open spots in the cars box. lord knows theres quite a few.

Go to a JY and plan on spending some time there. You'll need to get the fuse block out far enough to take it apart/mess with it. likely it's hardwired to the interior wiring, instead of being a screw type connection like the underhood box.

2003 SSEi added to his, and when I pulled an underhood apart from a W body..it was sealed w/o any way to do it. You might be luckier with the interior box. But go pull a couple apart and find out what makes them tick (I have one at the house actually.. hmm) then you could use pins from a JY car etc and add your circuits that way.

I may have to try that. I've got a feeling I may just scrap this idea. I'm considering just making my own additional fuse panel with about 5-6 circuits on it. I may even order one of those Painless wiring kits, but don't know yet. I think I'm going to install some plug outlets in the car. Did you do this? and where did you put them?

What I would do with this is to just run a hot wire from the battery(or under hood fuse block) to the space behind the glove box. I think I've identified a pretty good spot there where I could mount it. Then I could run all my wires to that spot. It would be completely hidden/concealed, but access would be pretty easy if I ever needed to replace a fuse or wire in a new circuit, as you can just hit the glove box tabs and it lays out of the way.

Caddies had a nice fuse block in the trunk for about what you are thinking about.

I'd hit the JY. Find some of the caddy pieces and tear into a few regal/century fuse blocks to see what it takes. You could likely tap off one of the feeders to teh fuse block if you did it right.

i just thought about how my boat was wired up, things like this may do it for ya.

Another idea is when you want to mount your relayx in the engine bay and have them look nice. Get a little relay bracket off say a caddy or older Bonne etc and it'll make a much cleaner install.

Bill, I guess I need to do some JY engineering. I have a bunch of relays. What does the diagram look like for this? batt to relay to fuse panel? Do you know how I tie in ignition vs always hot?

The diagram would be super easy. You'd see which supplies weren't sucking a buttload and fusing etc. Then tap off that based on what you want to run, put that (if battery supplied and not ign) through a relay that is triggered by any ignition on wire in the fuse panel.

If would help to a degree if you said what you were looking to run from this extra sub panel.

Personally I would never run power for an IC pump or EWP pump through the firewall. I'd run a ground on/off trigger only. That way if anything happens to it, the default is on with ignition. Those relay holders I mentioned would give you a nice install. Or you could hide a weather proof relay down in the bumper with the pump.

If you are looking for a kick butt relay with some nice 10gauge on it. Hit up a 92-99 Bonne, Start at the fans and bring that wire back to the relay center on the firewall. You'll have 8 or so feet of awesome wire etc. This is what I used for my EWP and IC. You literally couldn't tell that they weren't stock. But then it had a relay center.

Well, I wasn't exactly sure where I was going to run the IC off of yet. This was more of just an interior auxiliary use idea. Right now I've got the power drop running my homelink(which I know uses next to no power) and my PLX wideband. PLX doesn't suggest running multiple sensors off of this circuit. What I thought was that if I wire this little bus in then I could have some individually powered circuits. Not really worried about using a lot of power, just looking for clean power with a clean install that would have easy access to add more stuff if for example I wanted to add some LED lighting circuits or whatever. One circuit will probably be used to install some plug outlets though.

FWIW I added an additional power outlet off the stock circuit. Never had an issue with it. Especially considering that most of us don't use the one in the cubby.

I go back and forth on the HUD all the time. The puddle lights would be more my speed. I think I'll get this car put back together with the current build items, but I may decide to take my mirrors off one at a time and install puddle lights in the winter. I saw these lights the other day on ebay and totally thought about your puddle lights.

I'd think you could install them in the mirror as easily as the bottom of the door. Besides the fact that my doors will be sealed up from the sound deadening so I won't have the ability to add these in later without a ton of work.

i need to re wire mine power socket in the cubby to be off when the cars off. i jammed my xm unit in there and i use the outside power socket to power it so i can unplug it when the cars off. that cubby is kinda useless in my book.

I don't believe you'd have room in the mirrors for that beast, those are pretty big. If you want to wire up the puddles, nab the door light circuit and get it into the mirror before you button the panels up. That way you can just pop the mirror out and you are done.

why would i need a relay? ive ran powers sockets right off the battery with a in line fuse, its straight 12 volts.

my plan was to run a wire with a add a fuse from the fuse box, to the socket, leave the factory ground on it. plug XM into it and drop in in the console. done deal. no more wires hanging out. and it turns off with the car.

I was keeping with the stock wire size etc. same circuit.

i hate electrical stuff, ill stick with the easy way lol i want the outside port to have full power all the time, as its nice to have a live one all the time, unlike most cars today.

Scotty, that would be a prime use for the ignition drop down under the dash.
