Did you get the CV out? Most of the time a chunk of 2x2 or 2x4 and a hammer is enough to overcome the spring clip, and pop it out. Just use the chunk of wood on the flat of the inside of the inner CV housing, and persuade with a hammer..

I've dealth with the kinda stuck the OP is dealing with and a 2x4 would be a pile of tooth picks before it loosened the axle.

my axle got stuck the same way you are describing.. we used everything, and tryed and tryed but nothing.. finally after about 2 hours we pryed with a long crow bar and it poped loose BUUUT broke the clip off the differencial side and pulled the WHOLE axle out.. we had to break the whole passenger side down and reasemble the axle with new cclips. after that headache i went ahead and replaced the cv axle so it hopefully doesnt happen again. i was told by a tranny shop that if the clip is put in incorrectly that the only way to really get it out may be to break it and replace it.. hopefully not your case.. goodluck!! let us know how it goes!

Well, tried the CV joint removal tool and no go, that driveshaft will NOT budge...any other ideas before I call a mechanic?

Is this the piece your using? It the best I've found as it lets you hook in nice and solid. I was dealing with a bad clip and ended up pulling the entire output shaft out of the transmission with the axle. Then just took a couple hits from the side with a hammer and they seperated.

Thats the tool. It has to be a bad clip. He's afraid he may damage the tranny casing.

Gearwrench tool #82248 is the best tool I've found for the driverside axle. It allows you to adjust to any angle you need. Plus..if you ever see one, you'd understand that the axle is afraid of it.
One thing you can do is to pull the passengerside axle. Pull the diff cover and split the diff off the output shaft. Then gently pull the output shaft out with the driverside axle. Then beat the back side of the cv joint while holding the output shaft. It'll come off soon enough that way.
Then reassemble the diff ensuring you don't tighten anything if it doesn't sit 100% flush w/o pressure. Then slide the output shaft back on with some grease on teh c clip to hold it centered. When it stops. Give it a smack with a block of wood and hammer to seat it into the diff.
Now put your axles back in.

Well, he's fed up with it and afraid he will damage my tranny case so I called my tranny guy and he told me a trick to try...didn't work either so she's going to him tonight along with the new cv joint axle we bought. He said he'll charge me about $80 to $100 to pop it out and put the new one in. That price I can live with, guys good, he rebuilt my '99 Ram 1500 tranny and beefed her up real nice, was really pleased with his work, especially with the way I trashed that tranny. I thought it was toast, that's why after I totaled the truck I kept the tranny, it's goin' in my next Ram!

Mechanic just called, they had to take the whole axle out of the tranny. They could not get the axle to give at the circlip, had to put it on the bench and work it off, so hubby wasn't crazy. Mechanic told me it took 2 hours instead of the usual 1 hour but he's only gonna charge me the $100 for one hour that he quoted. He never had one stick like this, he was surprised.

Pressure was put on the clip and then it opened and bound things up.

Bill said the clip was fine, he said it was poor design on Pontiacs part. At least he kept his word and only charged forn the hour he quoted. An honest mechanic...who da thunk it? Right?

I learned a lot of the basics from a good friend, and honest mechanic. He's got a shop in a low income section of town and is always overbooked. Honestly and good pricing will keep you busy in any ecomony.

I knew this guy was good when, after spending $2100 to rebuild/beef up my trashed Ram tranny, I received a thank you card in the mail along with a box of gourmet brownies! What business now a days sends thank you cards AND a gift? Usually they take your money and maybe you'll get a thank you. He dosen't charge for computer checks or when he tests a vehicle I wanna buy, can always call for free tips and advice and he won't do any work h knows my hubby can do. Good ones really are hard to find.

Wow... This seems like a nightmare.. I just did both driver and passanger axles and im glad i didnt run into anything like this... It fought us a little popping the old one out but within 10 minutes or so it came free on both sides.
