    2001 Grand Prix GTP.

Water pump was frozen, and the serpentine belt broke. I replaced the water pump and both belts. Started the car and it ran for about 10 minutes. Then the serpentine belt started to fray again. Any ideas?

Alignment? You sure the belt was seated correctly on the crank pulley? Did you check tensioner/idler pulleys?

Thanks for the quick reply. We were thinking maybe the AC compressor was out of alignment, but we didn't have to touch that. Just the power steering pump.

I agree with mechguy on this one. Double check the belt to make sure you didn't miss a groove somewhere. Check the power steering pump again to make sure it is tightened all the way. If those are both good then the tensioner may be shot.

Take off both belts and check the condition of both the pulley contact surface, and its bearing operation. Roll the idlers by hand to see how smooth they rotate, and especially check that plastic idlers grooves. How was the belt tension?

Urrgh, I know how you feel right now. My buddies GTP shreds belts like CRAZY!!!, Only the outer rib gets shredded though. I've checked the alignment of pullies, replaced all idler and tensioner, put in a/c delete, and this thing STILL eats belts!!!! I want to just go ahead and replace all them, but he doesn't have the money right now to go that far.

Good luck man, I hope you figure this out!
