How do you click the performance shift on or is it a option thats not on every gtp. I can see it in my dash when the sun hits it just right. I don't see any buttons or any thing inside my car. Someone should write a book on modding
this car. I live in a small town and must people here are all mustang guys.

They don't have the performance shift after 99. However it's still in the pcm and it's still in the guages(location varies). You can ground a pin out on the pcm and you will have performance shift all the time or you can wire a switch to that pin and when you flip the switch you'll have performance shift. It's definately a must have. I know it's pin 21 but i can't remember if its the blue or clear connector. Find a writeup before attemtping this.
Check for a button on the shifter if it's not there then you most likely have do what i described above.

Performance shift, with an untouched PCM only changes the line pressure and desired shift times. Meaning Performance shift mode is firmer and faster shifting. With a tuner you can also make differences in RPM shifting under WOT and Part throttle and MPH shifting, TCC lock/unlock etc.

You will see the words PERFORMANCE SHIFT inside your DIC on most newer GPs. You have to turn on the settings in the PCM and get a shift lever that has the PS button on it or you can rig up a switch somewhere else on your console to make it work.
The benefits are nice in the fact that you can have your daily driver tranny setup in nonperformance mode and then have your track or jackin around settings setup for when you select the Performance Shift mode.
Its something well worth looking into. I made a write up for it on our how to section.

Most people find performance shift settings great for daily driiving, and leave it on all of the time. I think having a switch though would be nice though.
Do the OSID's on GTPs without Performance Shift have the Performance Shift tables setup up? On the Impalas, Performance Shift and Normal have identical values in the tables.
Nevermind: I just looked at a stock 2002 GTP bin and they do have different values. The Performance Shift tables are not that aggressive, but they are different than Normal.

Well yeah GM is not gonna put massively different settings in the peformance shift. I think they mostly took off the speed limiter, and changed some shift points to hint at more spirited shifting, but nothing crazy.
Of course you are gonna seek out people in the community who have redone their tranny tunes and get their profiles to make a better performance shift tune. I have Chris O's tune he uses on his GTP, different shift points and such beyond what the stock performance shift has to offer

I like my more crisp shifts for normal driving. Less wear and tear on the clutches plus higher line pressure is a lower duty cycle (less wear) for the dreaded pressure control solenoid.

Partially right. The speed limiter is set up in the spark and fuel tables, not the transmission settings.

if I was to end up having to do this ( id probably start w/ the switch then get the shift nob from PFYC.. but actually having a switch would seem pretty cool, ge one of those little ones from RS w/ the red cover) but yea anywho back to the question.. would i HAVE to get an aftermarket PCM or would i be able to do the recalibration w/ the hand held.. and if so is it setup to automatically set the shift points to such as the earlier years? or would all that have to be tuned? cause i saw its ll the same just minus the shift button so i wonder how much calibration and setup would be needed. does it do exactly what the 99's and so on Performance shift does?! ( i know i asked like 2 questions twice lol)
just curious to know what to expect

Like IndeedSS said, the cars that don't have performance shift wired usually have the same numbers in both the normal and performance tables. No sense in changing them if they can't be used, right?
And what is "the handheld"?

The hand held tuners like Hypertech won't help you much. You need someone with a DHP PT to help you out. Give me a few minutes and I'll post the two tables at are different on a car with performance shift. Please note that even though there are only two tables changed on a stock PCM when you flip the switch, with a Tuner there are a few more rables that have the Normal and Performance Shift tables you can adjust.

These are from my son's 99 GTP stock settings. These two tables are the only ones different from the factory.
