Experiencing RPM surges and transmission slips while in Manual, tapshift mode in my 08' GXP. Driving in the mountains I try to engine brake if possible to avoid heat build up on the brakes, when I go from 3rd to 2nd at highway speeds the RPM will jump, come back down, and repeat, the car eventually slows down and it goes away. If I go from 2nd to 1st with my foot off the gas it's even worse as the car will drop out of gear completely, once I reengage the throttle it catches and slams into gear. If I put the car in Drive it functions just fine it seems, then again the downshift points don't really put the car into a lower gear at high rpm so it's hard to tell. Any idea what is going on here? Car is at the dealership now for a separate issue which they found lifter issues related to a ticking noise...they are repairing it now, this has been an ongoing issue though nothing new. This new RPM surging issue came after I made the appointment.

    1. Could it be the lifters issue causing the RPM surging? Some issue with the PCV, vacuum?
    2. Don't usually use Octane booster but I threw some in the tank for the hell of it last fill up, this issue started shortly after. Being at high altitude I just realized that the octane requirement is less. What's the chance the octane booster messed up my timing and is causing this issue?

Kind of new to the forums, hoping to start contributing as often as I ask questions.

    Thanks

i'd avoid down shifting newer cars, the trans aren't made for that, as a cdl driver the rule of thumb is to lightly hit the brake and slow down 10 mph, let off and roll till you hit the speed limit, and repeat as needed to avoid over heating the brakes, and in a big truck the brakes will heat up real fast and just stop working altogether and thats no damn good. I've applied this to all cars i drive and have have no warping or brake fade at all.

cant help with the trans problem, im sure someone with trans know how will chime in.

98 Buick Regal GS, F body brakes, Caddy STS wheels, tinted tails L36 bottom end, lightly ported heads, 1.95 roller rockers, headers, gen 5 N* 3.0 pulley, FSIC, 42 lb injectors, a BrandonHall rebuilt trans, DHP tuned and AEM water/Meth injection https://goo.gl/gpV5kW

Gotcha, thanks for the advice. Mountains out here in Utah have some pretty steep grades (7+ %) so even if you let off the gas you are definitely going to accelerate. With some of the steep grade sections lasting 10 miles plus it can be pretty rough on the brakes by the time you are out. If I drop it into 2nd on a moderate grade I can maintain the speed limit at a decent RPM without touching my brakes. The front rotors on this car warped not too long after we got here, so I've been leaning more toward engine braking. I guess if it's that bad for my transmission I would much rather replace the brakes/rotors...
