Our engines need MORE air, not necessarily cold air.

Actually your engine needs a supercharger

More hot air ='s more knock hands down can't even argue with that!

your point is valid, but in the situation where the car has a blower on it heating up the air on its own then it really negates the need for cooler intake temperatures. this becomes even more apparent the farther you mod.

given that you'd be n/a, then a short ram near the fender well would be best, but an FWI is always and always will be too restrictive of a design.

Well I only ran a 4" tube to that corner, but didn't stick the air filter in the fender well, Instead used an also home made rubber heat shield leveraging the reinforcement bar on the corner to hold the heat shield. Not sure how would you describe that one it's not a FWI nor an open cone.

So cold air would reduce knocking but yield less performance?

what? no. colder air will always provide a 'better' intake charge, however, there are diminshing gains with it. the difference between 100 and 120 degrees is marginal, but the difference between 80 and 100 degrees is different. kinda getting it?

the blower cars dont need colder air, they need more air. n/a is a different story.

So what if some designed a massive heat shield that went from the throttle body all the way to the fender? Inside it would be a setup similiar to the one in the OP with a lot of empty space towards the fender. Would that have the best of both worlds? (less restriction + cold air)?

I do get what you're saying about the blown cars however wouldn't it be a risky thing to do creating more knock on these cars? My gtp only has 82000 miles on it, it's a red coupe. Don't get me wrong I really want to be able to hear the intake and supercharger it's very quiet with stock air box.

I don't know why aftermarket companies haven't made a kit to fit the front grill inserts with a ram. Have it funnel up in back of the headlight where you could have an open cone sitting there. Kinda like the gto inserts but have black funneling tubes to direct air right to the filter. Although it would still be getting hot air from the engine bay it would be getting more air, plus cooler air.

If I'm understanding you right, you're asking why they haven't made fenderwell intakes in mass? The way you're describing it would have a lot of bends... bends reduce airflow. That's why we say open cone... no bends, not slowing down the air at all. FWI do slow down air.

No, I'm not saying have the open cone in line with the ram, I'm saying just have those rams be ducted to rush cold air to an opening right under where the open cone sits. Not being in the fenderwell but just where the stock air box is.

Not really, a kit like I've described would be able to be permanent. Therefore eliminating the need to do that at all, while making it street legal.

meh...bend in the intake are worthless. the best intake you'll get besides the open cone is something with a 22.5* bend and a straight section of 4" tubing. or if youre creative you can make one long swoop of an intake, but being able to bend a 4" tube like that is fairly difficult without the right tools. anything that goes into the fender is worthless. shove it in the fender hole, but any bend after the initial one hinders performance.

also, making an intake from the front scoops will be hard, have a ton of bends, and will be fairly worthless. silva is right with taking out the headlight.

i get what your saying but doing such a thing on a fwd is redundant because all those bends will retard the air flow.

would you get colder air in? yes would you get more in? yes, when its all said and done however it probably wont be worth it.
