my gtp is nothing more then a winter car. its not a really bad rotbox yet but im not putting any more money into it beyond basic repairs and maintenance. the salt around here destroys everything and im just going to nurse it along for another couple of winters. my summer car is a 1996 camaro and that's the car that i will keep out of the salt and dont mind spending money on.

anyways im looking to fix this thing as cheaply as possible. my resonator has a whole in it, im sick of patching this thing up every few weeks. what do i have to replace it with. i know the one side is flanged. what are the exact dimensions of the pipe that i need to use for replacement. obviously the ends of the pipe have to be larger then the exhaust that's on the car so it will slide over ends of the existing exhuast so it will be able to be clamped. is the exhaust on these cars 2-1/2"? so would i need something with a 2-1/2" outer diameter? what do i do with the flange? just cut it off?

when this car's body finally does become undriveable im probably going to buy a regal GS, a super clean southern car. if i got it oiled every year perhaps it wouldnt rust much. i use a process called krown, but the grand prix had already been ravaged by winter salt when i bought it. i bought it fairly cheap and its been a good car but they seem to rot out. i have also heard that the regal doesnt rot as bad. i very much like both the L36 and L67 engines, at 160K the engine runs extremely well. it's everything else that starts to fall apart. if it werent for the salt i could drive this thing for another 100K easily. man i hate that stuff

Either replace it with a new resonator or get a glass pack the same size and put it in. IIRC the id pipe size is 2.25".

so i would need a 2-1/4" OD diameter pipe to replace it? i do not want to buy another resonator. that's $90 i could put into my camaro. i just want this car quiet enough so i dont have to worry about getting pulled over by the cops. i change the oil on this car and if something really breaks i fix it otherwise i dont spend any money on it. its eventually probably going to just be a parts doaner in a couple of years.

Don't delete your resonator, it will sound like poop, and by that I mean it will sound ricey. Just buy a new one of RockAuto or something.

rockauto price $60 plus shipping. where do you buy it for $35? as i said i like the GTP but im not willing to spend very much money on something i drive in the salt. the passenger side took a deer hit a while ago. i never bothered to fix it neither will i. for $35 i could justify that but i dont want to spend sub $100. the car is also going to need tires at some point, and i will probably put 1 more set on this car before im through with it.

so how does a regal GS compare to a GTP? i really do like the bulletproof L67 what an engine. my two favorite engines, a 3800 or a small block chevy.

If you think patching the resonator is a pain, you'll find splicing a piece in sucks big time. I'd take it to a cheapo muffler shop in a bad neighborhood. They are used to cobbling together exhausts and they'll do it cheap.

Or do it yourself and learn the hard way.

The previous owner of my GP had removed the resonator. He cut it out and welded in a piece of pipe. You can see some images here: http://chrisb.users.superford.org/Gr...Converter.html

I used Tire Buyer for my tires. Less than $400 for all 4. All 4's are Tiger Paws too.

A Regal is the same, engine wise and everything, just has better interior and better features. Except they don't have HUD's .

well i know that the regal GS is the same mechanically which is why i like the idea of buying on. DO they rust less? no body cladding, isnt that was causes the grand prix's to be so much of a rot box, that plastic stuff holds all of the salt and grime against the metal. the tires im probably going to buy the same tires i bought for my camaro they a falken and i paid $95 per tire local price. they ride nice and hold the road well.

i fixed the exhuast im thinking it will last longer then its been lasting. i was using the exhaust repairs kits from the auto parts store, it was almost as thin as tin and the exhuast gases would burn through it. i replace it with some 24 gauge sheet metal that i had. its heavier gauge then that auto parts store kit crap. im thinking it will last a while. it sure isnt loud anymore and i already had the metal and clamps so i spend $0 on it. if it lasts it was a good cheap repair, if it doesnt then im not out any money. i really dont want to spend a whole lot of time underneath a car that is dripping crap on me and on the floor. i have a wood stove so i have heat but then all of that stuff starts to melt

i like 3800 powered cars for daily drivers and small block V8's for seasonal cars. we have a 99 bonneville SSE and a 2000 GTP. when i do buy something else its gonna be another 3800 car. my wife's bonneville is a north carolina car, very clean. it going to get krown treated every year, they claim in doing so it will never rust..... well i hope they are right but i dont know. it will slow it down no question. i would hope to buy a clean regal GS from down south, then i would have another car loaded with good drive-train parts.

This is 100% false. The body cladding has absolutely nothing to do with the body rotting out. Look at the Grand Prix SE's they rot just as bad if not worse than a GT/GTP.
