I am thinkin about putting a 165 thermo in my 04 gtp comp g. Wondering if that's a good idea or not. Just seems as though when I open my hood after driving its so dam hot in there, cant even touch anything. So thought maybe help it out a little and run it cooler. Is this a good idea or not?

its too cold for no reason.
if you wanna get a colder t stat, get a 180.
just an FYI. your engine gets so hot because of the supercharger. even with a thermostat, your supercharger will still throw off a decent amount of heat.

Running ANY cooler of a tstat is useless without a tune to adjust fans. FWIW I run a 180* with a tune and my junk is still super hot after driving it. Welcome to the world of a blower car.

Ya I have a reprogrammed pcm on its way to me supposed to get it wed. But not sure if its adjusted to that or not. I think that it turns the fans on very slightly earlier, and keeps them runnin for 2 min after key is off if over 180. So you guys think I should just drop it to 180 from 185, Is that what i'm getting from you?

A motor is hot because its a metal block with a zillion explosions going on inside it.

So of course you are not going to able to just straight up touch things and expect them to not be hot, maybe you havent worked on many cars before.

160 thermostat is stupid, you arent hot lapping this car on a track day.

Run a 180 if the temp of the motor really concerns you, it will bring the temp down maybe 10-15 degrees but honestly the car won't know any different. Most PCM's dont care if the temp is 170 or 220, anything above or below those numbers is when the car will adjust parameters.

I have worked on many cars, and know that things get hot. But im just askin if it was a good idea just to cool it down a little. I figured that running a little cooler would maybe make it a little happier givin it a little more life maybe. That's my main concern.

Running too cold of a thermostat is BAD for an engine.

ok that's fine I will leave it then. Just thought it would maybe make it last longer, and maybe run better. I will leave it the way it is then.. Thanks everyone!!
