those pliers work better than anything else sold, if you failed at it, you did it wrong. you grip the filter where it meets the engine, same for the loop type, any where else is a fail. or potential fail.
ive owned every filter wrench under the sun over the years. those pliers are the best way to go. they dont slip, you dont need to figure out how to put it on the right way like the metal band type. those cap end wrenches aint bad, but dont always work so good. as its on the soft part of the filter.
