    You dont have to do anything with the balance shaft if you don't want to, it's safer to leave it alone and let it chill if you don't know how to properly delete it or you're not pulling the motor.

    I've yet to see a rear main leaking. Believe James has said about the same. If you have an oil leak or missing coolant (with good lims) it's this crapbox gasket like mentioned.

    Most guys think their oil pan is leaking...and likely it is, but once that's done and you still have a leak, that pisses a guy off. Doing the amount of work you mentioned, I'd pull the motor - your choice of top/bottom removal and drop it on a stand. I find it much easier to access everything w/o a car surrounding it.

    That back cover, I often find the bolts have come loose as well. I use some RTV front and back of the gasket at the lower inch or two, then add a little locker to the end of the bolts. If done properly, you shouldn't have to worry about it again.
