Thread: 2000 GTP with a 97 engine problems

I'm new to this forum, so if I post this incorrectly sorry.

I have a 2000 GTP which I recently discovered has a 1997 engine in it. I've had it for 2 years with no issues besides a recent fuel pump replacement. The other day as I slowed down to make a turn it stalled, started right back up and continued on. Stopped at a light it stalled again. Tried a few things like disconnected the battery for a bit to reset the system and still having the problem. I changed a few sensor (MAF, Crankshaft, and IAC sensors) with no luck. I am now getting a P0171 code indicating a lean front bank. I can't find any vacuum leaks. I can disconnect the MAF and it will run, then I can reconnect it and drive it for a bit before it starts stalling and dies. Any ideas on a cause? I'm hoping it's not the ECM, although I figured if it were I wouldn't be able to get it to run part of the time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And the only thing that make me think it isn't a vacuum leak is the car will run intermittently and when it does it runs well. I would think the vacuum leak would be a constant problem.

When I hook up the OBD it shows the intake vacuum holding steady at 32 while it idles. When I could keep it running. I have checked everywhere with not luck on a leak. Any thoughts on possibly the EGR or PCV causing the problem?

Yes on the crank sensor.

UPDATE: Ok, I just finished pulling all the vacuum lines off and checking them. They are good. I pulled the fuel rails and replaced the injector O-rings just to make sure they weren't sucking air. I check the wiring as best I could, it all looks good. I checked all the plugs and wires, they looked good and fire strong.

When I start the car it runs a couple of seconds and dies, I'm getting no codes at this point, doesn't seem to run long enough to trip one. I unplug the MAF and and it does exactly the same, starts and runs a couple of seconds then dies.

Sorry for all the posts, but I think I have it fixed, sorta. So pulled Relay 15, the Fuel Pump Speed relay and bent pin 85 out and reinstalled the relay. The car now runs. I will give it a day or two just to be sure. This bypasses the fuel pump speed resister which is the apparent culprit. Nice that I spent $500 to find this out. But I now have a lot of new stuff on the car.

The EGR tube looks good, no visible leaks there.

Something else I keep seeing on other forums is bypassing the Fuel pump resister. I pull the relay and jump connection 87 and 30 but it wont even start. I'm assuming this is not the correct pins to jump. The pump wont even come on. If I jump pins 30 and 87 on the main fuel pump relay the pump runs, even with the key off, and starts then dies after a couple of seconds.
