Thanks for all the responses... I am in the process of recording it over the next 1000-3000 miles. I put almost 800 miles a week on so it shouldn't be too long to get a trend on record. I just check the oil in the morning and have noticed the change and couldn't really find anything on this site that matched the circumstances. I will "re-think" my process of oil changes, thanks!

every car ive ever owned with 100,000 miles or more has always burned a quart or oil before 3,000 miles on a oil change. just the way it is.

GM considers it normal, probably because of the Tech bulletin about it. They expect that 1 quart every 3K miles is "normal". I don't measure oil in my cars...but I'd say that's likely about right.

My 06 uses a little oil, in fact to be honest I have never owned an internal combustion engine that did not burn a little oil over time. Sure, some use more than others but I consider anything less then a quart in 1000 miles to be acceptable.
On a new car I'd be pissed of course but at 100,000 miles a quart in 3K is more than acceptable in my book
I run 0w30 Mobil 1 in my GP and 0w20 in my wifes Honda powered vue. The Honda 3.5 with almost 90K on it burns around 1/4 of a quart in 8000 miles. The GP with the 3.8 at 44,000 miles around half a quart in 3000 miles or so.
Also, adding a 1/4 of a quart every time you check it is just a bit much for me. The engine tolerates a range of 1 quart. That means if your near the bottom of the range, or top it doesn't matter. I don't add until I'm a quart low unless I'm going on some long trip and assume I may dip below the minimal level. Same goes with my ATVs, I add when I'm approaching the bottom of the operating range on the stick. For some reason a lot of guys think it has to be to the top of the dipstick. In my opinion the "best" spot is dead center of the operating range.

i never top of my oil till its a quart low too. who wants 1/2 quarts of oil laying around?
from what i understand, engines make more power when a quart low too.
i think it was Edwards in nascar last year had a missing oil cap allowing oil to escape from the engine. i think they got a fine and some pts taken.

On our engines I'm sure they technically make more power a quart or even two quarts low. The poor crank is sloshing through the stuff.Originally Posted by scottydoggs
