I’m bench building a 4t65e-hd for a STOCK 2001 GTP. The core I’m using was previously pulled from a 2002 Regal GS. It was pulled because of the codes that it was setting;
a. P0742 (Torque converter clutch stuck on)
b. P0757 (Shift solenoid "B" stuck on)
When pulled, it was still functioning, just bucking or surging when warm at speeds above about 40mph. From the research I've done, and what I saw during the tear down, it looks like the torque converter failed and sent debris throughout. No catastrophic failures though. Trans had only had 43k on it. I’m assuming it was a GM reman unit based on the “GM Parts” sticker on the side cover, and the lack of a metal spec tag. Just a sticker on the housing. That being the case, it already has a lot of the later model year upgrades. (like the hardened 4th)

So, here’s my questions;
1.) Do I really need a “master” kit for a core with 43k on it? Or is an overhaul kit good enough? Is it possible that TC grit damaged the frictions, bearings or bushings? What do you recommend, based on condition of the components shown? (Link to pictures)

2.) Should I replace all or some of the solenoids and MPS? (based on the PCM codes) Or can I just clean and test? (Ohm the resistance?) - Leaning toward replacing...

3.) What other parts would you recommend?
a. Sonnax TCC relief valve
b. Gemini chain (stock chain is barely within spec)
c. Precision of New Hampton torque converter

After a complete tear down, I am very impressed with the condition of everything.
a. All measurable components within spec per the ATSG
b. No chips or burrs on any of the gears
c. No ratcheting on the input/3rd sprag or 1/2 roller clutch
d. No heat checks on any of the steels
→e. After pulling some of the valves, it looks like I will need to pull every valve and thoroughly clean valve and bore. They were all sticking at least a little due to the grit in the system.


If I were building this unit for my MY car, I would just buy a master kit and be done with it. However, this trans is going in my father in laws stock car. Money is a big factor on this project. That is the main reason I’m building it myself instead of the local transmission shop. I’m trying to strike a balance between cost and reliability. He is planning on driving this car back to Michigan withing a year. I want to make sure this trans is super reliable, but I don’t want to replace any parts unnecessarily.

I’m using DVD video manual and the ATSG service manual for reference.
