Thread: How to replace a lug nut stud.

I need to know how to replace a lugnut stud because I sheared one of the passenger front ones off, here is some ranting back story. So I was taking off the right front wheel of my 01 GP GT and one lugnut was hard to get off, not thinking about it I took the rest of them off. Replaced the quick strut, as i was tightening them, the one lug nut sheared the stud off thus allowing the 4 way I was using too hit me right on the dome. After some cussing and swearing, I remembered I bought aftermarket wheels which came with lugnuts about a year ago. Would the place I bought the wheels from be able to fix this problem for free or be able to help in anyway you think? I know I'm being kinda cheap but I just replaced both front struts/springs, tie rods, 2 new tires because they worn really weird because of bad tie rods. So is fixing the broken stud that easy?

I think you need to replace the wheel bearing but i'm not positive. You can run with 4 lugs no problem

I would need more input on this, I mean would it be okay period? I have to go on a trip to Michigan Friday, which is about a 600 miles round trip. I'm about to take it to the stealership or local mechanic just so I have I done before then.

I've driven 5 lug cars on 3 lugs for months with no problems.

I think a new stud can be pressed in, but for time/cost better off just replacing the hub. I mean it is a grand prix, probably needs it done anyways.

I honestly feel that this post was stupid because I just found out how to replace it googleing for another 10min by basically removing the rotor,caliper and just pounding the stud thru with a Hammer and punch then, pull it thru using another lugnut as a spacer. Me not having air tools means this is going to suck...Found it here seems kinda right.: How do you replace a full length stud on a 1999 Grand Prix front wheel Seems kinda right.

tomorrow I'm just going to yell at Tire discounters to try to get the stud fixed for free or reduced cost.

Replacing a stud is super easy.

Remove all the brake stuff, rotor, caplier etc etc and grab a hammer and chisel or something and pound the stud out, 1 swift smack and it'll come out, then take the new stud and hammer it in from the back.

Easy as pie and might cost you 3 bucks for a new stud.

EDIT: seen what you posted about going somewhere to do it, but honestly all you need is a socket set and thats it, its just that easy.

I need to go their anyway for an alignment and 2 tires so, while I'm their il see what they can do. If they can't do anything il just do it myself.

man I had a talon that sheared lugnuts like a mofo at first a ford wrench was my preference(Sledge Hammer) but I keep one thing around just for this purpose now



its a crank from something im not sure total weight about 20-25 lbs used like a battering ram

Alright I got back from Discount Tire. They did the alignment, and mounted 2 new tires I needed and thew in the stud repair for free. So I'm happy.
