Pirate windows 7, install problem solved! I got a spare vista key if you need it
Might have to figure out what drive it is and download drivers manually.

The problem is diagnosing and fixing something over the Internet is like trying to perform surgery blind.

I HIGHLY doubt that software killed your hardware, **** breaks down, it happens. specially dvd roms and ram... years ago I went threw 3 dvd rom drives in like 6 months.
that being said I love windows 8, switched from windows 7-8 and its much faster at startup and its its been proven to be faster in many situations, including games which is good..cause im a gamer lol
Unlucky, iv never had any hardware fail except when I almost cooked my CPU. Set the vcore stupid high on accident.

DVD drives today are made very very cheep, thats why you can buy oem ones for $14, and they tend to fail really fast. Windows 8 has as much to do with your dvd drive failing as Mexicans had to do with building the Pyramids in Egypt.
Late night post, lolz. I'd bet the drive itself has failed. In my experience, Windows 8 is just as good as 7 and XP at auto-configuring peripherals like disk drives and hard drives, possibly better. Don't get me started on Vista, I could fill pages with how many ridiculous software-related issues I had to deal with while using that POS OS I'd bet the drive just took a dump on you.
If it was something like a gamepad or possibly a wireless mouse/keyboard, then it could be drivers, but disk drives in my experience have always worked with the generic drivers in Windows. Even XP had no trouble.
When you scan for new hardware (in Device Manager I'm assuming), go to the drop-down menu at the top and find the option for showing hidden hardware. Then see if anything weird comes up that can't be identified. If you don't find anything, I can almost guarantee it's all the drive's fault.
So before I start my rant let me give you some background. I am a Geek Squad ARA (Advanced Repair Agent) with 2+ years exp and if you think windows 8 is "crap" then you have no idea how to properly use it. Windows 8 is faster, less resource intensive, runs smoother, more secure. Sure it had it quarks when it came out but 8.1 fixed that and now its great. Search is amazing, the charms are useful when ever you need them and they are gone when you don't. It hunts 95% of drivers down for you and you need to do nothing. /end rant
Now as for the DVD drive two things could have happened. The first and most likely is the DVD drive died, go to where you bought it and see if they can test it. The second and verry possible is the Upper and Lower filter drivers decided they didn't want to be installed anymore. Two easy ways to fix this:
1 - DIY) http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems click run now, follow directions, and profit
2 - Pay) Go to best-buy have the GS look at it and pay them. Don't be an ass and they will be nice.
*I am NOT nor is Geek Squad liable if you follow my instructions and you break something. Do it at your own risk, but realize if you manage to mess up something your dumb.
Good Luck!
haha no. Someone hating on windows 8 because "it sucks" is just really ignorant. Its just like someone saying your grand prix sucks because its a pontiac.
Or use chrome. 90% of sites will work on chrome. unless the developer is a dumb ass lol
