    Not to trash this thread, but I think a few of the repairs to your car were just because you couldn't stand them not being fixed though they posed no harm to the car.

    Otherwise I havent had a car thats costed me alot of money because I did the work myself.

    This can be true but also normal if you buy a car that you know needs a lot of parts to be replaced, and you do all the work yourself saving money there. So buying a car with a good engine/trans, but a lot of bad parts such as wheel bearings, mounts, brakes, suspension, etc.

    If you buy a car that values for 3.5k, pay $500 because it needs a lot of stuff that's listed above, pay $1500 in DIY repairs, and you got a deal. Still paying more to repair it, but that would be intentional then.

    my car is a low mileage 06. i've replaced three wheel bearings, done brakes (rotors and pads) all around the car, replaced misc. suspension bushings from taking crap apart so often, replaced a oil sensor/valve, done plugs, and oil changes...

    it has ~80k miles on it. and the parts for my car are way more expensive. you're a lucky person to get away that easy...

    Paid more in repairs than I paid for the car? nope!

    with my 87 Camaro I have put in a jy radiator ($35), new cheap front tires ($165), spark plugs and wires ($40), and flushing out the coolant ($20). I have some more parts in my room I need to install, throw some wheel bearings on it and a few other things including a paint job and I'll be in great shape. I paid $2250 for the car.

    My 2000 Intrepid was purchased brand new for $22,000 but was worth about $5000 when I got a hold of it with 64k on it. So I threw a few sensors at it ($50), a couple fenders ($80), and I was in good shape until 68k when the motor blew. So I went out and found a 2002 intrepid parts car with a good 3.5 in it ($550) pulled the 3.5 out and threw a timing belt, tensioner, and water pump on it ($70), took the wheels with new tires off along with some other bits and pieces and then turned around and sold the parts car to the junkyard for $450. Also put in a new steering rack but that one was a gift thanks to one of my moms exes.

    So far I have tried to be as resourceful as possible and I am the mechanic in the family so labor only costs me my time and energy. The only car that I have had that is starting to turn into a money pit is the gtp that we got for my brother, with all its rust on the rockers (now has rust on one strut tower too), intake gaskets (which duh you have to do), water pump, oil pan gasket, sway bar bushing bracket, supercharger belt, and window repairs. And them damn thing still needs the oil switch in the pan replaced, the valve cover gaskets, headers (because the po put on a 3.5 pulley), exhaust leak fixed, a little brake line leak fixed, a new power steering rack (I found one of the sleeves stuck open on one side and it was soaked!), a new sway bar and endlinks (current one is cracked), a new hood at some point (gtx hood that is splitting in half), atleast new shocks, and of course that strut tower rust. Oh and the car was $3200 with a salvaged title and covered in hail dents, but it had 116k and a new transmission.

    Welp a good amount if the repairs were just things u were being picky about and can be expected for a used car plus didn't you have your family's dealership do the work...so u didn't actually pay for most of it did you?

    That being said repairs shouldn't reach the value of the car unless you bought a lemon or it has a place in your heart.

    Automobiles depreciate in value daily, therefore they are not investments. In addition to depreciation, there are maintnance costs, costs of an accident, etc.

    Seems like every car I've ever bought with the exception of my 99 GTP. I do all the work myself so that saves a ton of money. My CompG made it 5 miles before it broke a coolant elbow and puked all the coolant out on my drive home the day I bought it... Then it needed a few other parts immediately. Does it suck? Yes. What can you do about it? Not a damn thing, even the brand new cars break. I love my CompG and will continue to fix it and upgrade it until I no longer love it. Lol. Think these cars are bad? Go buy a late 90s dodge ram with a cummins in it!

    People seem to think different and ultimately forget what a car is...

    A piece of machinery with a cabin for occupants. This machine must endure and is exposed to temperature fluctuations, environmental contaminants, dirt, vibration and shock, friction, etc., etc. In addition it creates its own temperature fluctuations, dirt and contaminants... Etc. These machines are not magic carpets and the aforementioned items cause wear on parts that rub, fluids that flow, etc. this of course does not account for quality control and or manufacturing defect etc. which can all lead to failure of parts and or machine!

    Every once in a while, you might just get a car that was put together on a bad day, or with parts from a bad lot. A crap shoot! But certainly, you must expect that when buying a used car, even a new one for that matter... things will break.

    It is a machine plain and simple, there are no machines that exist (yet) outside this requirement.
    So I agree, all cars cost money, just some more than others...

    bought a 93 dodge dakota with a v8 for 750$, a week later everything took a **** dumped 850 in parts, with free labor courtesy of myself doing it, couldnt get rid of the thing for 1000$ ended up selling it for 750.

    never buying a dodge again

    Bought my 04 comp g in feb for 2200. I'm now at around 3500 in it and I love the car. It blue books for around 6000 I think.

    ive put twice as much into my car then i paid for it. but then again, i paid 800 for it, and it needed work. im pretty much into this car for its bb value. so i cant complain to much.

    Well lets see 5 years ago I paid like 15kish for it. I can tell you I haven't put that much into. Even though I modded it that was a decision I made knowing it didn't add value and if I was ever to get rid of it I would demod and return the car to near stock. As far as repairs it hasn't needed much...new battery, master cylinder, starter, brakes, HB, and minor AC work. Things that were changed (optional)..water pump, CPS all changed during cam install to avoid future hassle. Oh and I need new rear struts here soon.

    It was all worth it to me, parts have been rather cheap compared to other cars and even after owning the car for 5 years I still enjoy driving it.

    Cars cost money. You can have a payment for a car, pay to fix a car or do both at the same time. No matter what.. cars cost money and parts go bad.

    I laugh when people say a car is better due to low mileage. My parents cars destroy themselves based on starting..driving two miles and turning it off. Repeat. My cars typically have a ton of miles and run great with me beating on them daily.

    Are you the guy that pissed and moaned about interior pieces looking like there might be a scratch on them?
    I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

    My 97 12v cummins I paid $7000 for it then I put about another $4k in it. The front suspension overhaul (ball joints, track bar, ujoints, wheel bearing hubs and tie rods) cost $1500 just for parts! Then $1100 for tires. Then $800-$900 for a turbo swap. You gotta pay to play! It doesn't matter what it is. Like my dad always said "if its got tits or tires on it you're gonna have trouble with it."
