So yesterday I had a meeting with our manager and senior manager. I sit down in there and they proceed to tell me that we just wanted to give a heads up on things that you might be hearing of and wanted to give the facts rather than what the rumor mill may stir up.
So they open up and tell me that the company has decided to increase its Global Presence. Now at first, what runs through my head is that since I am the senior tech that they were going to need someone to oversee all this and that things might be looking up for me.
Instead they tell me that this so called increased global presence is going to be done by transferring some of our work to an over seas site. So I ask, you mean we're going to out source right? No, they respond, we're increasing our global presence.
Now, anyone that knows me knows that I despise people that cant shoot straight with me and hide behind pleasantries, excuses and other things like political correctness.
So I pursue this matter. One thing leads to another and basically it was a refusal to call it what it is in some vain attempt to disguise it or make it seem like something positive rather than its actually shipping some of our work overseas.
Will I be affected? Not so much, maybe a little as I deal with a lot of government work and they cant move that overseas. But there are others that will be and instead of telling them like it is (read: we have to pay you way more than we do them so we are going to move the work there to save money) they want to hide behind some euphemism.
I have no problem with them trying to save money. They are a business and they did not go into business to make me personally independently wealthy. Furthermore, in this highly competitive global market, if you dont streamline there wont even be a business to provide even minimum wage jobs let alone anything good paying. So it doesnt upset me in the least that they see the need to cut costs and decide to do it this way (which as I gather is not going to be a huge impact to us in general as they will be moving work from other areas of the company to here to compensate for what is lost), what does irk me is that they feel the need to hide behind all these terms.
First, it was you got fired. Then it was you've been laid off. Then it was a work force reduction in which you have been impacted. Do WHAT?? Umm, isnt that the same thing. Are you expecting someone to come into the office and tell them they have been impacted by a workforce reduction and them say 'whew, I thought it was something serious, thank you'?
Now its not we have lost jobs, its not we are out sourcing, its we are Increasing Our Global Presence. What the heck over? If you are going to fire a guy, fire him. If you are going to lay him off, lay him off and explain to him that they can no longer support the job or need to cut costs, etc. Be straight with them, dont hide behind these lame euphemistic terms.
If you dont like me, say so, dont tell me Im okay then go behind my back. If you dont like a decision I make, dont like how I do something or what I have to say, say so. Be a man or a woman and be straight about it, dont hide behind fancy language and misdirection.
No wonder our society has become such whiners.
