I was debating on getting K&N High Performance Air Intake System <-- link . Is it worth getting for a 2001 GT with 140k miles or a waste?

Nope waste make your own for $40
Search diy intake on here I'm sure you'll find some infi
I had a few years ago and sold it. Picked it up used from another member for way cheaper that what they sell for. It was ok. Nothing special. The stock intake on a 99-03 is actually a good box. It's the tube to the throttle body that is restrictive.
Some Bonneville guy actually dyno tested the tube not to be hardly restricted at all...
Regardless, I always thought that the accordian crap tubing sucked. I'd still get a smooth bellow to replace it, install the IAT, and dremel out the front of the airbox and drop a K&N filter in there.
Or, just bypass all of that and bolt a cone filter on the throttle body.
Done and done.
I thought about it, do you get the same performance out of a home made cold air intake?
Might stay with stock, base on what everyone is telling me. I am not racing my car just want some extra pick up when I hit the gas.
Going to sound like a noob asking this, but how dose the air get to the cone if it is connected directly to the TB?

Yup. The K&N for our cars is a gimmick... The same gains can be had with a diy intake. The truth is.. Most of us won't notice a difference and do it more for the noise then anything.
I have never heard of a carbon cleaning, that sounds like a gimmick as well.
Did some googleing on it and most people say its not worth it and you can get almost the same results with a can of seafoam.
These are a couple mods you can do to that blueguy was referring to.

This one is a new write up

The mods on my GT gave me a little more pick up and made my car more fun to drive. I daily drive it and don't track the car.
I did end up picking up a a used SLP intake on one of the forums since I didn't have my stock one anymore when I sold my K&N. If I had my stock intake I would have gutted it. You can live without the exhaust as well. The stock one is good. I have a borla that I bought about 15 years ago when I first bought the car.
These are the mods I have
SLP CAI
Borla Cat Back
Plog
HV3
HV TB
ER Rockers
PCM Tune
Skip anything catback and replace the downpipe and front manifold with a p-log (or just get some ebay headers). That will be the biggest bang for your buck. Then do a simple intake or buy a cheap used one. after than if you're so inclined, replace the PCM with a tuned one.
Apart from these upgrades you won't see worthy increases from really anything else you can do to a NA engine IMHO.
I got a ZZP CAI, but I wouldn't pay full price for one. I picked mine up for like 75 bucks NIB. You can probably build one yourself for less than 75 bucks and it will be just as good.
If you want more pickup you would be surprised how much cleaning the MAF, TB, and new air filter does depending on how neglected it is. But I would pickup a big cone filter off amazon then hitup Menards, homedepo, lowes ect and make your own Intake if your gonna have your TB off or if you just want a new filter.

Thanks! I bookmark the pages, I want to try the gutted air box or home made air intake, what tools do I need?
I called a Dino shop a wile back for a PCM tune and they wanted a sh!tload of money
I do not have the skills to that myself I would have to have it professionally done. Is it still worth it?
Thanks. Makes sense hehe.
Thanks I found a write-up on making your own intake using an elbow pipe then you drill a hole on top for the sensor that sits on the top of the pipe and then clamp a cone filter to it. I am not sure which route I'm going take, that or the gutted air box, I need a dremel.
I do that for sure! It was neglected bad! The car barley ran when I bought it and had at lease 6-7 codes at lease, I fix them all, cost me a pretty penny but, runs like a whole different car now! Some of the issues was my fault, I raced my GT once and blew an oil pump and one of the lifters rattles now. My engine bay looked like an oil bomb went off, my whole eng bay and firewall was covered in oil and pieces of rubber everywhere! this what my eng bay looked like before
And what it looks now: (I cleaned up best I could, still not as clean as it was :/ )
screw is missing on bottom left, I have it I just got to put it in lol.

To get headers put on at a shop is gonna charge you an insane amount of money just because they can be a hassle and the labor involved to get fitment right. You best to find someone near you willing to help you out for possibly some fizzy beverages in return.

I'd rather do the work yourself.
You learn from trial and error. Start with simple things, such as an intake. Go from there. Start small, work your way up. That's what I did. Never worked on a car before owning my GTP, started with an EBay intake...and it went to a fully built motor a few years down the road.
And yeah, a few blown engines and mistorqued things here and there. It happens. That's why you only make those mistakes, once![]()
Agreed. I took autoshop in high school which taught me the basics and basically everything else I learned by reading, then doing it myself. There is a how to for almost everything online now days to help you get through a job, plus places like this to ask questions. All you need are the tools, the space, and the will to do this kinda stuff.
This was my adventure...when you get some sit down time, enjoy...lol
