    And I need to vent.

Just got a call from the Veterinary Specialty Hospital to tell me they will have to remove one of my dog's gallbladders tomorrow. The meds had been working great for a few months. We knew this might eventually be needed, but hoped it would be further off. She never acts like she feels bad. Only when she pukes or has something really wrong can we tell that something is up. She is blind and get nervous when she has to go places so I feel bad that she will for sure be spending the night at the hospital tonight and likely a few more after surgery.

Meanwhile our other dog is at home and beside himself wanted to know where she is. They don't like being separated and have been together their whole lives since they were at a puppy mill and rescue.

Here is a picture I took on Saturday of them. Reba is the black one who is having problems. Willie is the blonde one who is at home and worried.

No word from the Internist this morning. We didn't go see her after work because we thought she would get upset when we left and didn't take her with us. Then thunderstorms rolled in and we felt bad. They hate rain. They were at the rescue in New Orleans when Katrina hit and had to be evacuated. Thunderstorms terrify them. By that time it was too late. I plan to leave work for a little while today to go see her before surgery which I assume is almost 100% chance unless the IV meds they gave her overnight helped termendously.

They are cocker spaniels. We keep their coat short because Willie (the blonde one) has had skin cancer and its hard to notice if anything pops up with a longer coat.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. They are like our kids.

Talked to the vet a few times today. They had to do surgery, but she is not in good shape and the surgery is risky. There aren't any other options though. Going to go see her in a few minutes and talk to the surgeon.

We got to see Reba for about an hour or so around 12:30 today. She just curled up in my lap and kept wagging her tail which was really great for my wife and I. Even the Veterinary Internist told us it was good to see her wagging her tail because it meant she was feeling better. We met with the surgeon after that and had a good level of comfort with what they needed to do and the risks.

We walked out of the hospital and someone had hit my wife's Camaro and left their car parked against it. Waiting 2 hours for the lady to come out and the police to sort it out certainly didn't help, but the damage is minimal and is really the least of our concerns at this point.

We just got a call a few minutes ago that Reba was out of surgery. It took a long time because how bad it was. I won't go into the details, but they removed and cleaned up everything they needed to as well as took biopsy's for tests to make sure there is nothing else going on. She is not out of the woods because pancreatitis is likely with gallbladder removal. There is about a 25% chance she won't survive pancreatitis. They have her on IV antibiotics which she has also been on for the last 24 hours. They have a Critical Care specialty doctor watching her the next 24 hours and on call checking on her all weekend. We should have an update by morning. At least she is in the best place she can be for care and the surgery went well.

Great news. She has continued to improve over the weekend with no signs of pancreatitis. As long as things continue she gets to come home tomorrow.
