Actually credit is incredibly difficult to repair even in the event of identity theft. There is no forgiveness from any of the credit bureaus or for that matter understanding. You can catch things early and on put a hold on it without any damage, but anything that becomes deliquent without your knowledge for a prolonged period will hurt you no matter what, even if you manage not being responsible for the debt. There is a way for you to place a lock on everything, meaning no accounts can be opened at all under your name, i believe you contact all of the credit bureaus. Personally i would have everyone involved press charges and call it a day. Good luck, don't quote me on anything, but start searching and reading up about identity theft.
