MA has no emissions after 12 years just safety for me this year. But it also depends on the place you go, some guys are hardcore and actually put the car on a lift to examine everything. The place I goes just tells me my exhaust is a little too loud but doesn't fail me for it.

We have emissions testing here in nc but it's a joke. They just check your CEL and if it's off you pass. I passed with no cat and all the codes turned off in my camaro.

In IL they require emissions testing every other year for cars 4yrs. and older. What's bogus is that most state testing facilities got closed down and redirected to private mechanic shops. Which of course makes me weary that they will try and force some sort of repair on me. Very few state run places are still open. They do the OBD check for newer cars. You're allowed for one system failure and thats it. For me it's the EVAP code that I can't shake. I think it's 7 systems total that they check. Hate getting that notice in the mail. My GTP is due for a check since October. Can't renew my plate sticker till that gets done.

they drive your car inside a large building, my friend had a Zo6 vette with a cam headers heads tuned and a retarded cat back set up aka no mufflers really.

as he drives in the guy looks at him and says "you're kidding right?" failed him right on the spot for being way to loud. so he had to put the stock cat back on to pass inspection lol

my brother never once took his chevelle to inspection, ticket back then was 30 bucks and there was no way he was passing, your eyes used water if you stood behind his car to long, the sniffer would have died if ever hooked up to it lol

Do they have a clearly stated standard, and a way to measure the the noise output? If not, I'd tell them to pound sand. Those domestic motorcycle guys don't seem to meet any standard.

they way the building is its very hollow inside there and you hear a small exhaust leak bouncing off the walls. his car was way to loud clearly had aftermarket parts. like it was really to loud. i have no idea how he drove the car like that. im sure they could not talk inside the building with the car running with out yelling.

you have no clue how NJ works, we used to be the inspection Nazi's of the world here. not to long ago you failed for any little dumb thing. if you passed you could feel pretty good about your car. cause they really gave it a good once over.

back in the 80's my 70 bird failed for emissions, i pulled out parked on the side or the exit, popped the hood and turned the mix screws in 2 turns each, backed up to the second chance emissions testing and passed. guy just laughed as he stuck on the pass sticker. same guy just failed it too.

No, I get what you're saying. I've heard the horror stories.

According to what? I guess what I'm saying is, the pass/fail must be based on some set standard. You can't just have some guy randomly deciding what is too loud and what is okay. I'm not arguing. I just want people to understand they have a right to challenge the system.

It's not my job to prove that my car meets your standards... It's your job to prove to me that it doesn't. See the difference?

if you cant talk normal and hear whats being said standing next to it, its to damn loud lol you are inside a echo chamber so its even worse inside the building.

your not supposed to be louder then it came stock, all cars pass a decibel test at the factory, they see cars all day long come though, they know whats to loud.

this thing was worked, it idled like a beast.

Come to think of it we did head to have emissions testing in Minnesota back in the 80's. They built all these sniffer inspection buildings and you had to pass a hydrocarbon test before you could get yearly tabs. My 74 Dodge Charger with glass packs always passed no cars back then. so not sure what they were accomplishing. Which must be why they quit doing it in the 90's.

Who decides what normal is? I like to scream at the top of my lungs in "normal" conversation. In that case, nothing would be too loud! LOL

Now we're getting somewhere. That makes sense.

Truthfully, I don't like an obnoxiously loud car. I just like to challenge authority.

with the odb scan they feel its running fine or the cel would be on, new cars are self diagnosing pretty much, so they dont do the sniffer test.

what the test sheet looks like here. if all systems show ready you pass. they dont let you slide on one here. pretty sure i have like 26 codes deleted in my tune lol

Anyway, it's a very strategic dance in getting to the emissions place at exactly the right time, and pass. You can't go right after you reset cuz systems aren't ready. And if you wait too long, all the malfunctions show. LOL. Oh man... the different approaches I've had to try. Passed though!

I need to do like you and SgtMarshall and get those codes tuned out.

i live a mile away literally, one mile, dont think they would want to see you with a tuner hooked up. why i just went home and did it. around the corner works too, or gas stations are also a good spot for me.

ive read a scan and reflashed while getting gas to lol

I didn't know you could tune stuff out of the PCM till I got on this forum. I'm sure most people don't even know that's an option.

I don't think those robots care what you do five feet from the bay doors. They're on autopilot. All they know is what the machine told them. It passed or it failed. Plus, (and this is pure speculation) I don't think they get paid enough to give a s....

they drive the car over a camera to see the cat. you should have seen them under the hood and all over the car looking for it, even called over another dope to "help" look for the cat. whole time the egr was missing and the evap, its line is just there open to air. aka open vac line.
