I'm pretty familiar with lsx engines but damn it's night and day more complex then my 3800. We basically have 3 cams for mildly modded engines.

I edited my first post...but yeah...TONS of options. Honestly I was planning on spec'ing a cam for my 3800 build but never got around to it.

for a cam: brian tooley or pat g. custom spec. do not allow yourself to buy any cam that uses a comp core, regardless of who's making/selling it. you've been warned.
and texas speed is fine for anything they are a VENDOR for. i wouldn't buy anything that they actually MAKE.

Ok I am going to probably be the one with the most experience on this, but I have done several H/C/I on LS cars and ordered tons of parts from TSP. I had a ported and shimmed LS6 oil pump from them, and their 228R cam on a 112 LSA for my old car since it was an off the shelf and known setup it was a good daily driver setup.
Never once had an issue with them, they have returned emails/calls rather quick and with great info.
BTR makes great parts, I love their valve springs, my old Z28 had 60k miles on a comp cams xe-r lobe cam (the 228R) and no issues what-so-ever with it. The only people I have ever heard having an issue are folks who get an aggressive cam and don't degree it, that will cause a ton of issues.
Lastly, I would say work your way from back to front on these cars, I got lucky with over 170 passes on my stock 10 bolt, but H/C/I and spray you will run mid 10's and break that rear end. I ran an FTI 3800 stall converter, Greg at FI is awesome and answered any questions I have. They will ask you your setup and suggest a converter based on that.
Overall the best way to do it, is to figure out how fast you want to go, then build based on that.

Good to know we have a resident lsx expert here.
Not 100% sure of my goals yet for this thing, but I do know that I want it to be faster than my gp so that's a start.
I'm thinking since it's not a dd maybe an aggressive cam, 243 heads, a solid 92/92 setup and all the accompaniments.
Maybe a nitrous setup for track runs but who knows. I'm more interested in a nitrous setup for my GP but I'll see.

If it's an auto the stock 4L60e will cry and will grenade with power, they are weak unless otherwise built. 6 speed manual will hold good power to a point aswell.
The fast intake isn't a worth while upgrade. Think about the dollar per horsepower here. $950 plus a throttle body for very minimal gains. You'd see far better power increase with just a head swap and cost way way less. LS6 intake should be good for well over 400-450whp and you'd need some pretty aggressive camshaft and what not to see that. I see it too many times over that people just waste their money because it's what someone else did and they wish to follow.
Swap the factory diff for a eaton posi/tru trac and let it eat. A 9in swap is pretty overkill for what you are after. Tons of turbo truck guys run their 10 bolt to 600+ whp.

I agree with not going for a FAST either... pick up a used LS6 and have it ported. Take the $$ difference and put it towards something else. My GTO is very minimally modded and it is putting down 333 and 348 to the rear wheels... SLP long tubes, Lingenfelter CAI, Corsa Touring catback and dyno tuned by Jeremy Formato... not too shabby for an "LS1" in a heavy pig of a GTO. Best ET was at Atco Raceway in NJ... 13.23 at 109. That was on street tires, not power shifting and definitely needing a driver mod. It has the MPH for 12's.

So keep the ls6 intake and maybe just pick up a ported tb? I'm down with that.
As far as the transmission it's one of those things that I'll upgrade if it blows or gives me trouble. Since my gp is my dd I can take my time and fix that if it blows or messes up.

A mild torque converter and a dyno tune that will address the shift points and torque management will go a long way with driveability and the fun factor. Judging by what you say your goals are, it won't take too much to get you there.

The LS6 is great for most off the shelf cams. The FAST will give you the best gains with a larger cam, as in a 238/242 at 113 with .620 .6xx lift...
That's just an example, by no means is it what I would recommend.
You just want it faster than the gp? I would say a 23x/23x at 112-114 LSA and .6xx .6xx would be perfect. My old Z28 ran 11.6 with just the 228 r cam and 241 stock heads milled .042".
The guy that bought it from me sprayed that setup with a 175 shot and ran 10.6 @126 with a strong head wind with a DA of 3500 ft.
Get a built 4l60e, with the Ls1 you won't make tons of torque to warrant the 4l80e. I would recommend FTL or another known transmission shop. Get ahold of Greg at FTI for your converter, and personally I would swap to an 8.8" at least, the 10bolt is OK, but why not do it and not worry about it.
And I'm really not an Ls expert, I learn more about them all the time, but I have worked on quite a few, I give my advice based on experience and not off of the forums, lots of misinformation floating around.

Got a new set of c5 z06 rims in black delivered today. Waiting on tires that should be put on friday. I went with 285 35 18s for the rear (didn't want to go too fat) and 275 40 17s for the front.
