So a customer recently brought their 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT in for wheel wobble. I thought it was the brake rotor, but it still shook after I replaced it. I tried moving the cv axle and it was moving up and down slightly. Would I need to replace the cv axle or the wheel bearing?

First, put offending wheel/tire on balance machine and check for bent wheel or tire out of round/tread separation. Before you throw more parts/money at it.... check ball joint, inner & outer tie rod ends, etc..

When the car is in the air and you grab the wheel does it allow movement up and down, side to side, etc? How much movement?

Ryan? Are you posting on a forum to fix my car?

But seriously, this is why I don't trust mechanics.

Not sure who you are stocker but it's one of my close friends car.. plus I'm just starting to become a mechanic so that's why I posted on the forums so I'm guessing it's not yours. When I grab the wheel, it moves about 3-4 threads on the brake rotor

Then the cv axle itself has slight movement, the guy said that he slid into a bridge due to the icy roads out. But the wheel isn't bent. That was one of the first things I did

I haven't checked that, but I'm currently at work for another 6 hours. When I get home I'll check and let you know

When getting wheel movement, are your hands at 9 and 3, 10 and 2, or 12 and 6? This helps narrow down what could have play and be causing the problem. I do agree. In my time I have seem plenty of wheels that were bent or bad. Even more so I have seen tires that went out of round or had some tread separation that was hard to see until it was on the balancer.

Isn't that backwards? I always check for bearing play at 12 and 6 (up/down movement) vs. the 3 and 9 (side to side).

The wheel moves side to side, that would mean replacing the tie rod?

You would be replacing the tie rod END. Most likely the outer, but inners go bad too. Which end has play?

The part that connects the tie rod to the wheel bearing assembly is when it has play in it

take the nut off the tie rod, loosen the lock nut on the inner rod, then hit the flat spot of the knuckle where the tie rod passes through, 2, or 3 firm shots will pop it out. the car will need an alignment when your done, other side is likely shot too.
