Not sure if this has been covered here so I have copied some info I put on another forum and left out the Bs sessions again
I have posted before about the noise my supercharger is making ,after replacing the rotor pack it seem to quiet down for a fews hours then it was back again,
Im now pretty sure it is the front supercharger bearing making the noise & it is a result of **** and water getting into the bearing when I stripped & polished the snout, due to use heaps of paint stripper and a high pressure water blaster in the stripping process not to mention the all of the sanding when polishing
so I though this I would post this how to I found on the net for everyone like me who cant afford A yella terra snout and want to replace their bearings or disasemble their snout for polishing
http://www.rollingperformance.com/snoutrebuild.htm
I have already disembled my spare snout and intend to swap the shaft into my already polished snout housing once the bearings have been replaced ,I used a 3 claw puller to get the coupler gear off and a long piece of steel tube and a hammer to drive off the rear bearing (the rest is covered in the how to on the net at this stage )
Bearing numbers are 6203 & 6204(i think they are the same numbers of the idler bearings but are unsealed ) Im going to ring around to see if they are aviable locally or I have to order them in from the states
I bought the bearings today they cost about $7 each and are the same numbers as the idler pully bearings except without the seal
parts numbers are front 6204 and rear 6203 they must be rated for a C3 fit & 18000 rpm (I found this info on the net)
After ringing 4 bearing shops the only bearings they had in this size had seals ,they said this was the only difference between them and to remove the seals to allow oil to pass through them
using a sockets and a rubber mallet I carefully assembled the rear bearing & drive onthe shaft keeping in mind about the spline and checking everything is square (I know I should use a press )
Also checking the housing assembly today it appears the front bearing gets the majority of its oil through the rear bearing ,so no wonder the front bearing fails if the rear bearing gets **** in it
I bought the bearings through CBC , Ive have bought a seal but not sure weather to use yet or just to use the one of the originals they seem to come out in very good condition
When you start looking on the net they say you should use a nitril seal and then someone else says use a vitril seal and to confuse things they then say dont use a vitril because it can where a groove into the shaft!
I hope to have everything assembled soon and want to try some gear oil in the snout as mentioned in the other posts and see if everything holds up after a couple of weeks ,if I crashed and burn it wont have cost me a fortune
I removed my snout today and the oil was filthy lots of sooty looking particles even though I only replaced it a couple of months ago when I swapped the supercharger & coupler over I think it got so bad because of the coating of sludge in the housing and rotor packs that doesnt come out when you drain the oil ,both bearings had a lot of slop in the them and feel very gritty to turn
So after a good clean of the snout housing with the bearings removed ,I put the new front bearing into the housing and put the shaft in once again using sockets ,this was a bit tricky seating the bearing because the shaft is spring loaded so its best to take some measurements of the shaft in relation to the housing while everything is still assembled
Them I gave things a spin looking at different angles for any wobbles at both ends
