A while ago I posted about how the fans would not turn on when the speed control was set to 1.

Now out of the blue the fans will not kick on when it is at 1 or 2. The fans only turn on at settings 3 and up.

I have tested all methods of heat/air distribution on the car and I am positive that they do not turn on. I used to think setting 1 was to low and it just was very weak. Now I am for sure because 2 is also dead.

What could be causing this? It works fine on 3. The heat is strong. No weird noises or anything.

    Thanks for the help!

My first thought would be the blower motor resistor. However, it could be the ignition switch too, but the good news to that, ignition switch issues are usually accompanied by other accessory failures such as the radio, D.I.C, etc.

If its the blower motor resistor, there is no way to really test it out that I know of short of replacing the part. The good news is that they are not that expensive, maybe $25-30.

Looks like there is a tutorial out.

    Here

This is a comment made by some user on yahoo answers:

I would just like to say that I replaced this on a 2003 Grand Prix and it is not located by the center console and the resistor does not "just drop down". It took me roughly 7 hours dealing with this. I had to take the passenger seat out, peel the carpet away and even then had to push on the rubber shield in order to get enough clearance to take out the back screw on the resistor. The resistor is located way back along the shield and if you don't have a socket set with an angled piece you can forget about getting back there. You can't even see the last screw so it's a complete blind shot. This was a pain and whoever designed the grand prix placement of this part is an absolute moron. You have to practically cut up the shield in order to get at the part. I would have liked to know how a service shop would replace this because I have a feeling they would just cut a huge circle out of the rubber shield in order to easily remove the resistor.
    ... Sounds hard

looks like some pansy who cant work on cars. 7hours boo hoo, what a yutz. go under the passenger side dashboard, remove the blower motor, reach inside and remove the resistor. replace the resistor, replace the motor. done and done. if it takes you more than an hour please return your car and your man card

Well since that is such a certainty I would love to see a write up with pictures to that effect. Ive replaced mine and it was no easy chore. In fact I had to go buy one of those flexible shaft nut drivers just to get to that one bolt holding in the resistor that is up against the slope of the floor board.

Its fine to make such a statement if it were indeed that easy. It didnt take me 7 hours but it was a few hours getting that sucker out of there. Remove the seat so you have room to lay down and do things, then working against the slope of the floor board getting those bolts out and so on. I highly doubt its simply an hour long job.

But, I would love to see it done that quick, more so, the write up to go along with it that shows how to do it that quick. I am EXTREMELY comfortable working on cars and have done so for a long time and even on a exceptional day I doubt I could get it done in an hour.

next time mine goes bad ill make a write up. its like changing the spark plugs, guys cry about the rear ones. do sparkplugs on a C5 or an Fbody then see how easy the GP is to work on.

    That I'll agree with.
