After I press the up button and raise the heads up display onto the winshield its nice and bright. After about 20 miles of driving it starts to get dim on its own like a battery going dead in a flashlight. Sometimes if you bang on the dash it gets a little brighter. What gives?

It's a common problem. You need to take apart the HUD and re-flow the solder on the leads of the light load sensor. If you are unwilling or incapable, I would be glad to help, as I have over 20 years of soldering experience.

Nah, I can solder, weld, cut, braze, tig, etc. As long as its not on a circuit board. You say re-solder the leads going to the light load sensor. Anyone have a picture? Or is it obvious what needs soldered once I get it apart?

Light load sensor is the round can with the square element. Clean the conformal coating off the back of the PCB and re-flow the solder. Re-coat the board with clear nail polish.

Thank you sir, I meant to post up my pictures when I got home and completely forgot about it. The wife was hot on my tail to get a few things done and this just slipped free of my mind.

Take apart the HUD and re-flow the solder on the light load sensor. You'll need to remove some of the conformal coating on the board, and re-coat with clear nail polish when you are finished.

i took the HUD apart, and everything looked fine ( no burning, cracks etc.) there was a lot of dust covering the light load sensor, nothing abnormal though. should it be noticeable?

Look at the pins on the solder side of the board after you remove the coating. Sometimes hairline cracks in solder joints are almost invisible... Re-flow them anyway just to be sure.

what do i use to remove the coating? and what gauge solder? im not a huge solderer, to be honest, i do rarely

so anyways, i took all apart and noticed there was a lot of dust on the lense, so i wiped it clean, then i noticed that the pin connection ( not the red 2 pin, the longer main connection) was loose and almost pulled out on one side. so i reconnected it fully and put it back together to see if that did anything and ...... yes it did, the damn display was as bright as the sun much brighter than ive ever seen a HUD be. so i took it for a drive ( about 120 miles round trip ) and it stayed lit up and bright as hell. i think im all fixed up but only time will tell

update - after a days worth of driving ( roughly 300 miles ) the HUD has not dimmed. i think im fixed up. now onto the damn HVAC ISSUE

how do you take the HUD off? take the whole dash apart? isnt on top of the dash?

take the HUD dash trim off, remove screws that hold HUD, disconnect wire harness, remove HUD from vehicle. its a fairly simple procedure, just be aware of your dash board when doing it, you can, if not careful ruin your dash

Okay i didnt do this yet cause I'm afraid of damaging something. Does the hud just come right off the top of the dash? I dont have to take the dash, underneath it, off first? sorry just confused and tripping!
