I've found a few different threads on this but none really seem to match exactly what's up with mine. So if I go out to start my car in the morning (or after it has been sitting for a long while), it takes 3-4 seconds of cranking to start it. But if I go to the gas station or something and come back out, it starts right away. Fuel pressure regulator, weak pump or what? I did have a fuel leak on a couple nylon lines to and from the tank. Those lines have been replaced. But I still periodically smell gas. Cant track down the "leak". I changed injector o-rings this past weekend. Don't see any wet spots on any fuel lines (that I can see) or on the ground. Kind of at a loss here.

At cold start, turn the key to on so the pump primes then turn it back to off, and cycle the key to on again and then see if it starts quicker.

You shouldn't smell gas anywhere. I'd be checking the entire system over real close. Fuel can evaporate and not show a "leak" persay if the leak is small enough. Cycling the key a few times to build pressure in the system may show a leak somewhere as long as you don't start it up. Found one of my leaks that way.

Would also help to know what year/model you are working on.

Sounds like fairly normal loss of fuel pressure to me, I've had 2 99 GPs. I always turn the key and wait to hear the pump stop running, then crank. Usually starts quick that way but if you just roll the key all the way to crank as soon as you turn it, it will take longer to crank when cold. About 3-4 seconds, like you said. Might be a good time to eyeball the fuel filter for leaks, or replace it if its old. Like FordMan said, gas leaks don't stay wet and if you smell gas at ALL around the front of the car, triple check for wetness at the injectors and rail connections. Theres also the evap canister that could give off some smellable fumes if its in need of replacement. Thats behind the left rear splash shield.
All Grand Prix, all the time. 69 Model J, 99 GT & GTP coupes. All junk, haha.

Should have specified...my bad. Changed fuel filter with a gm filter when lines were replaced and changed injector o-rings last weekend
