Hey Everyone! This is my first post to this site and I'm hoping one of you can help me because I'm pretty desperate at this point. I bolded the main stuff.

I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. This car has been babied throughout it's life and no aftermarket stuff is on the car. Recently, I moved to SF Bay area from Indiana and the car was towed here behind a rental truck in case that information is needed. Three months ago, allegedly the fuel pump went out so a genuine AC Delco pump was put in as well as a new fuel pump resistor by a non-GM mechanic.

As of late an intermittent problem occurs, when my Fiance or I attempt to start the car the key gets stuck in the ignition and the car loses all electrical power. The lights to the dash die, the door locks, lights, everything dies. I know the the trick to remove the key by pressing the hidden button under the steering wheel. However, if I insert the key, nothing happens and the key is stuck again. My only solution is to remove the negative side of the battery to sort of "reset" everything which of course resets any codes in the system related to this problem. This most recently occurred on Tuesday.

Later on Tuesday, I parked at one of my destinations and when I went to restart the car, the lights would come on and everything but I couldn't get it started until the third time when I stepped on the accelerator as it turned over. Then later as I'm at a stop light, the car acted like it wanted to stall, everything in the car flickered, and two lights came on: the SRS Air bag light on the dash and the low fuel light on the heads up display (I had over a half tank of gas). When I took off, only the SRS air bag light remained on. At this point I took it immediately to the nearest GM dealership. At the time, they thought either the ignition switch was going bad or the body control module. Anyway, they couldn't get any codes related to the issue and the SRS air bag light stopped showing. So I picked up the car on Wednesday afternoon and they told me to bring it back if it acted up again.

Wednesday evening, my Fiance was driving the car and when he went to turn the car off at one of his destinations, the radio cut out, he heard a loud pop from the speakers and the cd was ejected from the cd player. Then as my Fiance was driving home, all of a sudden, the car loses all electrical power and the engine stalls. He hits the brakes, then all the lights come back on but the engine is still off. He gets it to the side of the road and it takes a few times but he's able to turn it back on. Thursday morning, I took it back in and they couldn't get any codes. They still have the car but haven't had success figuring out what the problem is. They say that the terminals on the battery look clean and that all the fuses are good.

Any suggestions as to what it could be?

Double check battery termanials, make sure they are clean and tight. Also sounds like you could have a power wire that has been grounding out the system. Look near the battery and try to locate the power wire and follow it around. Aftermarket radio installed?

No aftermarket radio installed. I told the technician working on my car to double check my battery terminals. He swears that they are fine. As of yesterday, they've been letting it idle off and on, taking it for rides and it's not acting up on them. And I agree, that it could be a wire grounding out. I'm not sure really how to double check that.

Also, I don't know if this is related. But sometimes I hear a faint clicking noise in the dash and also when I depress the brake.

EDIT: I've only really noticed the clicking noise lately b/c I've been a little obsessive with the car. It could be normal and I'm just overly sensitive to it b/c of all the electrical problems.

Does anyone else have any other ideas to the problem? Could it be the ignition switch?

For those that read this thread, I thought I'd give an update. They finally listened to my plaintive pleas to take apart the console of my car and look at the wires that run along it, as I had read on this forum and another GP forum that this was a problem with 1997 Grand Prixs.

The BTSI wire from the shifter separated from the wiring harness and arced over to melt another wire into the wiring harness. Those two things are being replaced. We figured since the car was also stalling while the dashboard lights going haywire, we'd also replace the ignition switch. Right now, my car is still in the shop (going on a week now) getting repaired because GM is still trying to locate a shifter.

Edit to add: I intend to update in a month or so just to give everyone heads up if this resolves the problem.

    Sounds like a plan.

Sometimes you get little feedback because it gets kicked back by newer posts and thus lost in the endless sea of threads. It happens lol.
