My 04 GTP did not come with remote start. I know some later models did or maybe the option wasnt ordered on my car. I would like to add remote start to my car but have heard many horror stories about things going very wrong even from a reputable installer. I figured you guys would have some info for me when getting remote start.

First of all, is this difficult? I do not plan on doing it myself but I dont need a whole bunch of my wires hacked to hell just to add remote start.

Can a stock system be added from an 06 or 07 GP with Remote start?

What are good remote starters out there? I would like to have a 2way system so I can montor the car when I am away but im not interested in loud alarms or anything else like that. It would be nice to know when the door has been opened or when the glass is broke.

Any advice would be helpfull, I should have one installed in a few weeks.

    Thank you

Well I never got around to installing one, though I had plans for it. I even bought the harnes that connects into the ignition switch harness and has the connections pre-made for a remote start harnes so that I dont have to cut and splice wires.

So, my advise to you, mainly because I love options on modifications where if I want to return to stock I can do so without hackin' up something, is to find someone with that harness. When I get my car on the road, I have intentions of putting a remote starter in there though I dont care to have an alarm or anything like that.

Seems you and I have similar plans, but I cannot answer your question regarding if a newer model remote start can be retro fitted to an older model. If it can be, I'll be hunting one myself as I would much rather keep the factory FOBs.

I will just say see if you can find someone selling that harness (I paid $20 for mine I believe) as it will save you or the installer from having to hack into the wiring. I dont know where to find them as I just happened across someone selling one and bought it. Hopefully someone else can point you in that direction.

I suppose if push comes to shove, I can look up the connectors and see what kind of trouble it would be to makes something like that harness.

    Thank you.

Do you think that a harness from an 06 or 07 could just fit right in? I test drove an 07 GT and it had the remote start option with the key fob. Getting the key fob would be easy but fitting the harness in might not be. If the car already had the option but just wasnt installed in might be easy to just plug and play. But knowing GM, its not that easy at all.

An aftermarket starter isnt out of the question. Especially considering my dad has a viper 2 way on his 99 Camaro. But he did the install himself and alot of wire splicing was needed to get it to work. I really liked the 2 way system as he could check the status of the car whenever he wanted.

At any rate. A good remote start will work even if its stock.

I cant answer the question with regards to the 06 or 07. My guess would be that it would not be that easy, but I cant say that with any assurance. However, it could be that the adapter I have may be from something like that, I dont know for sure. Then with regards to the FOB's there would be the question of whether they would work as well with an older Body Control Module.

Essentially there are a lot of unknowns. If you are able to transplant one from a newer vehicle please report back here as I would much rather have a factory set up than an aftermarket one.

For the sake of production ease and costs I would say the odds are that you the harness would have everything in it and you would just have to have all the components but the question then becomes how much of the harness are you going to need. Is it sectionalized so that you can just pull one part or are you going to need the entire harness. If its the entire harness your looking at a lot of trouble pulling it and reinstalling it and in that case it would seem easier, to me, to just get the same adapter I have and work from that.

I spent the better part of the morning on the phone with many local installers as well as a few dealers in the area to gather as much info as I could.

Prices out the door for "Familiar" setups were between 200 and 1000 bucks depending on my flavor and options. I was told by several installers that installing the stock remote starter will be no more easy then an aftermarket. This is because the 04 did not have the proper harness to support a remote start system. So either way I go weather its the stock 05 setup or an after market setup it will still require wire splicing and passlock mods to allow the car to run without the key.

That being said I was talking to a few dealers on how difficult it would be to install a stock system in an 04. I was told the same by all of them. 04 was very unique in itself where it was upgraded from the 03 but was also changed with the 05 to support remote start. I was told that If I picked up an OEM harness and passlock mod then I would be able to make a few wire splices to get it to work. Another dealer told me that there would be no point unless I found all the parts out of a junker because the OEM costs and time to replace the harness wouldnt be worth it unless I wanted to use Stock applications. Going down the assembly line the cars either had Harness A or Harness B. So basicaly if you have an 05+ and did not get the remote start option it wont be as simple as plug and play.

Talking to the local installers I was warned about the passlock workaround. 2 out of the 5 shops told me that the mechanism to block driving with the key out will fail and make the car not start. While they dont have a problem installing the system for me they had just said "Don't be surprised if you turn the key to the ignition and the car stall out. Amazing warning huh?

All in all I am on the fence with this one. I want the remote start but I dont want to break anything no matter how good the shop is. Replacing the harness would be difficult and costly while an aftermarket "Splice and go" would be easier.

Let me know what you think.

I am in need of technical info regarding adding the factory remote start to my non-remote start 2008 GP. I have the Key FOBs for it, and when I press the start button, the DIC says "Remote Start Disabled" - so I know it must be receiving the signal to do it, but everything is not there. So, what is missing??? Does ANYONE know or even have the faintest idea about this????? I am an Electronics Emgineer, and re-wiring or adding wires does not bother me, I need to now where and how many, and if there are any affected modules that have to be altered/changed, or maybe aditional modules......

    Anyone, please...

    Thanks

Whoever told you the engine would stall when you turned the key to ignition shouldn't touch your car!! The bypass might be kinda pricey, but it should use the data wire in the obd plug and it will do passkey and security interface...aswell as doorlocks. So it should cut down on install time. They might try and sell you an amp wiring kit also.

Shouldn't be too big of an issue to install a remote start in your car. I think all you need is a remote start + an immobilizer. I'm going to try and install one on an 08 GP and I got a Viper RS unit with immobilizer and door module interfaces. I'll post back when I've done it and let you know how it went.

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GT2. I installed a remote starter just this week. First they have to bypass the "pass lock". I wanted a remote with the ability to open doors as well so I dont need to cary two remotes. It also opens the trunk by holding the open door button. It working, the car starts, and when I put the key in ignition, it doesn't stall.
My problem is this: When I lock the car with the new remote, it doesnt activate the stock alarm system ( the one that is engaged when you lock the door with the GM remote while driver's door ajar). I have tested and in fact, If I was to lock the door ( alarm on or off) with the GM remote, I can't open with the new remote. In fact when the alarm is armed, if I start with new remote the alarm goes off!
The make of the remote is "direkt start" and in my area they almost all install this model
I specifically asked that the new remote do exactly the same as the old, but in fact when using the new remote I must put away the old one as they can't be used interchangeably.... Anyone know how to resolve this problem. I will probably bring the car back to them
