I removed my door panel and the piece of styrofoam, and found this trashed piece of metal trim just laying inside the door.....

What is it, and where is it supposed to be? I'm assuming it's a guide of some sort for the window? I've never replaced a window motor before so I really don't know what goes where.

The window has been slow going up since I got the car, and yesterday I tried to put it down but it stopped halfway and made a click/thunk sound, and wouldn't go down any further. It went back up fine, but obviously something is broke so I bought a new motor/regulator assembly and I'm trying to replace it.

    Please help!

Well I plugged the window switch back in, and sure enough, the window now functions up and down correctly. I guess that guide piece fell (rusted) out of place, and was obstructing the window from going down all the way.

So, now the question is where do I get a new one that isn't all rusted and screwed up? I guess I'll have to check out the local salvage yards. I'm not even sure how the guide piece is supposed to be secured into place, but I guess I'll figure that out...

That looks like the lower half of the window guide?? Holy rust, batman! Never seen one do that before. I'm not sure how it was attached at the factory but I would assume it was welded in place as part of the door assembly. Not even sure where to begin on that one. Hopefully someone else has had this happen and can shed some better light.

Look at the top image. On the lower left you will see that bolt. On the other side of it there is a bracket that the guide track was attached to. Mine did the same thing. I haven't found a replacement yet. Or have I gotten a new regulator yet. My window is some times go down but never up....

That plus no AC black leather = hell......... bah..

Let me know if you find a replacement track source.

That looks like it's going to be a HUGE pain in the ass to replace. I'd honestly keep an eye out for a replacement door, personally. But if you get it fixed, show us how you did it.

    Yeah, I was pretty surprised.

Well, I guess it's good to hear that I'm not the only one.

Yeah, I'll see what I can find at a salvage yard and go from there. If worse comes to worse, I'll just leave the guide piece out and see how long the window can do without it.

I went to the salvage yard and located a 2-door Grand Prix, and once I saw how the piece was held into place and removed it from the car, it was very clear. I put the replacement guide track on my car in a matter of minutes. It basically just slides up vertically into the door along the edge and clips into place, and the bottom part is held in place by a bolt.

Simple as pie, and my window is functioning correctly once again

The cost for the piece from my local Pick-N-Pull was right around $5 bucks. Gotta love junkyards!
