Im hearing a strange noise when take off or turn the wheel, only sometimes. Im not sure if its steering or suspension. The best way i could describe the sound would be a subtle buzz or purr. It almost sounds like metal rubbing against itself like if you took two 1/2" steel rods and rubbed them against each other or remove a sword from its holster. I will be keeping my ears open
for anything else more descriptive. Any input felas? 07gp

    Miles?
how old are your brake pads? I've heard of pads separating from the metal backing before, especially if they were the bargain brand.

Is it only heard on one side of the car/front/back/etc?

off topic..... you play with swords? /off topic
Its just a car.......with rust and dreams for the future!!!!

Mine does that after its been sitting for a week or two. Its usually when I back up and turn the wheel the other way to go forward then "errrrr". I can feel it slightly in the steering wheel when it does it. I havent looked into it because its hard to recreate.

03 GTP...Its got pulleys and stuff.

If this is after it rains then its to be expected.

The rain causes accelerated rust on your rotors and until you use the brakes to grind that off, it'll make more noise than usual.

car has 87 so it's high but the pads look and feel great. There is some rust on disk so maybe this can be it....no swords sry

no it hasnt been sitting but it does happen in the mornings and when I turn the wheel randomly after start up and take off, it's very hard to recreate.

Anyone else know way a remedy to this strange noise???

Its not the brakes, that was my first thought when I first heard it. But I never let off the brake while turning and it did it. Its definitely something in the steering. It sounds as if its coming from the middle of the car.

My guess is, is that it could be the Rack & Pinion...

Try this; have a friend sit inside the car and start it up. Roll underneath as far as possible towards the engine and steering system (I know its difficult with these cars cuz there's not much ground clearance) and have your friend turn the wheel to the max in one direction and then the other slowly and see if the steering system is the culprit. If you have a small metal rod like a screw driver or a small metal tube you can touch different components on the car with one end and press the other against your ear to see if you can locate the noise better (kind of like a stethoscope)...might help to identify which part is truly making the noise you're hearing.

Its too hard to recreate. It almost feels like it in the steering shaft itself. It does it randomly, maybe once or twice a month for the last 5 years.

Update: the strange buzz/purring noise happens when I steer sharply to park and slightly when I take off sometimes sounds just like a buzz. Steering, suspension problem? Should I replace fluid?

My 07 gt does this; every time, shortly after I start it up, AND move forward a bit.

I thought it was the traction control system turning on.

Please dont take offense, I am not trying to insult your intelligence.... Traction Control is not a system that "turns on" per say. Rather, its just a name given to a program within the ECM to counter the excessive amount of wheel spin when compared to non-spinning wheels (turns on and reduces engine torque by limiting fuel injector actuation during burn-outs for example).

The noise is either coming from the Rack & Pinion, the power steering pump, or perhaps there is a bad U-Joint or bearing within the steering shaft itself. Since the noises are heard during turns and mostly cold operation I would start with those areas (though steering shaft may be difficult to diagnose without tear-down ) Personally I'd lean more towards the power steering pump....

I looked into this some more, I noticed something.

Whenever this buzz happens, something is pulling current.
My headlights dim for a second, after the buzzing stops, they brighten back up.

I was thinking this was tied to the tcs someway, guessing, as in that system is now online, it's now ready for use.
I don't know how to explain this though.

    I used to see a message before I got new hubs put on;
It would say tcs active on the dic, then I would hear the buzzing noise.

After the hubs, I don't see the message tcs active, I only hear the buzzing noise.

I now realize this has something to do with the speed sensors coming online, being tested, not real sure how to explain it, since I don't really know what it's actually doing.

I wonder if you are hearing the ABS pump when it does the diagnostic check after each start-up.

The ABS system performs a self-test after the vehicle gets to about 2 mph. Most drivers don't even realize it's happening...

    Thanks for posting this.

It's not really how far I move, I was trying to figure out 3 feet, 5 feet, one full revolution of the wheel maybe?

It's when I actually reach a certain mph, close to 2.

Your lights are probably dimming because when you turn youre putting strain on the power steering pump causing it to bog the motor which in turn bogs the alternator creating less electricity supply for your car briefly. and the buzz is your power steering pump being strained.

There is a very good chance that this is exactly what's going on with the OP's car.

OP, is your car an '04 and up? If yes, this is probably your answer. My 2005 does the exactly same thing as described above. Funny thing though, it didn't always do this.

This winter I had some bad wheel spin in a parking lot taking off on ice, so the TCS system was activating, then I braked and slide and the ABS activated as well, after sliding about 10-15 feet the ABS system shut itself down because it couldn't get the car back under contorl. The ABS light came on, then the TCS light as well. The HUD started popping up messages to check the ABS and TCS systems.

Once the car was shut down and re-started the lights stayed off, but every time I take off now the TCS system kicks in momentarily after first starting up. Sometimes the HUD will says "TCS active", other times it will not. It's random, but the constant to this is that the TCS system always buzzes after first taking off now.

I've had the battery unhooked several times since then for other tuning purposes, and it still buzzes on first takeoff now even after all settings being reset to stock. I should probably get under the car and check out the wheel sensors and clean them or replace them if needed...
