    Hi

"New" dex is just like "old" dex..its just called "new."

For the reasons listed above, I would flush and use a silicated coolant. G-05 and its clones (Mopar "Long Life" and Ford "Gold" ) fit that description, or just go with a real traditional green coolant....that has silicates listed clearly on the bottle.

Remember: Color means nada. Ingredients is everything.

i went green in mine too , had a issue with a heater hose over spring and summer , was a small leak , lazy didnt want to change it out again (new hose had 2 pinholes in it ) so i just ran water for the spring and summer . finally got off my lazy butt and fixed the hose , but did a cooling system flush cause the water was rusty looking , btw swapped mine over to green 4 years ago when i got it just to be safe .

I would never run straight water. Along with keeping your cooling system from freezing, coolant/antifreeze helps keep water from boiling. You can get the coolant hotter than 212* and still be fine.

I ran pure water up until a couple weeks ago simply because I was doing a system flush over the summer. My only concern was rust and not having lubrication for the water pump seal. Other than that, I didn't see any steaming like I thought I would. I was actually surprised about that.

i have heard more than once that the dex will create a very thick substance that will build up in the system. i finally got to see it first hand when i took off my intake to do gaskets. there was a thick substance almost greese like in the coolant passages on the heads. I switched to the green since it has never failed me in the past.

^ TCO I agree: Water does become PUSHY at 212 deg
^ SnowDrift I agree: Never ever run just water (Lubricant for the water pump seal).

One week of 100% pure water = One YEAR of 100% pure grief.

Personally, I will never, ever run pure water ever again.

DEX does have a tendency to gum up. I have switched all of my newer model cars to the green stuff, it's been in my 98 Astro for 10+ years and I've had no problems, plus, all of the coolants say that they protect aluminum now... Absolutely wouldn't run straight water though...

Okay sounds like a plan...First chance I get, I'll flush the system and go green. I was just hesitant at first because of the huge sticker on the resivour "ONLY use Dex-Cool Coolant!". I trust you guys however, so green it is

My 2007 GXP has the dexcool in it and I have noticed "mud" in the over flow tank why is that , it can't be good . I want to flush it and change it to green or yellow . Is this a good idea or not.

flushing it is a very good idea.

doesnt matter what you fill with as long as you keep it fresh.

    Hi

If you are going just by mere color, you really have no idea what you are using.

FWIW, OAT coolant seems better suited to the new all-alu engines. Cast iron seems to react badly to a beach headed dex system.

Exactly. I cant believe how many people (on this site and other GM sites) that people just claim Decool will just gum up at the drop of a hat, no rhyme or reason.

Everything happens for a reason people.

I choose to switch because the other"green stuff" is less tempermental

its true that if you flush every 2 years and keep the system prperly sealed you shouldnt have issues with any coolant

BUT 50% of people think filling it with gas is proper car care

I've read around GM-oriented forums that switching from Dex-Cool to "Prestone" (green stuff) will eventually cause your water pump to fail since it's not the same thing.

I found that strange but I can't deny nor believe it. Anybody has a word on this?

That's right up there with the myth that once a person uses synthetic oil, they can never switch back to natural oil.
