Hey,
Is there a good way to test if an engine mount needs to be replaced?
I was doing a brake bleed the other day and had the hood open while I was torquing the pass front wheel. When the desired torque was about met, the engine would actually lean forward in the compartment like it wanted to hit the radiator! No clue if that is normal or if my top front mounts are toast (I don't see rips or anything)...
A visual inspection of the top mounts will tell you if they are toast. Keep in mind though, the top factory mounts are quite soft. I would suggest some mounts from 3800performance.com
As far as the lower mounts are concerned... the engine mount seems to go quicker than the tranny mount. I knew mine was shot when I couldn't fit the larger PF-47 oil filter on the oil filter neck. The engine was actually sitting too far back!
That's really helpful info, thank you! When I was watching the top mounts flex while I was torquing the tire I knew those things had to be soft to be acting like that.
I get this random clunking and I think it might be a motor mount. I've replaced the front struts and mounts and have inspected the front end a hundred times and can't figure out where it's coming from.
When you are visually inspecting the top mounts, what exactly are you looking for?
Your sig pic is sick BTW. Probably one of the best I've seen - I love it.
Unfortunately, I can't take credit for the sig, but thanks for the compliment.
When you visually inspect the mounts, look for obvious signs of rubber cracking and general fatigue. How many miles on the stock mounts? You could always "flip the mounts". there is a writeup in the how-to section. This is a quick and simple way firm up the mount. I'd say if you are close to or around 100K mark, it's definitely time to swap them out for either new OEM mounts, or more likely some solid mounts from 3800 performance.
You wouldn't mind taking a pic for me would you? I'm not sure exactly what I'd be looking for.
I have talked to a few people who really don't like all the vibration poly mounts cause. Does anyone know of any mounts that are maybe a step up from OEM but not quite as firm as poly mounts?
I'm probably going to try rotating the upper mounts and replacing the lowers.
