Sometimes when I'm driving my car kind of jerks and the rpm gauge goes to 0. the car still runs fine and no check engine lights come on. If I restart the car the gauge works fine again. Does anyone no what this is or has this ever happened to you?

Could be your crank position sensor. Get it scanned.

Look at scan tool data (PID) data when you are driving and see if the value corresponds with the tach. If the data in the scan tool is fine, then its a wiring issue or the cluster has a problem.

9 times out of 10 (hell, even more then that) those symptoms mean your crankshaft position sensor is going bad. it will only get worse, and it will leave you stranded when it does. one of these times your car will not start, and it wont until that sensor is replaced

remove the crank pulley and pull it off...get it scanned at autozone< its free> and also make sure to get the harmonic balancer removing tool which is a loaner and will be free in the end. good luck as some of the balancers are a ***** to remove

How much is a crank position sensor? And how long would it take to replace if I had someone do it?

a shop or a friend? autozone has them for $26, and a regular guy who knows a lil about cars (like myself) could probably do it in a couple-few hours

a shop would probably charge you $60+ for the part and charge you for 1-2 hours of labor

yeah this happens to me too except when i scan it the scanner says my tach is at 800ish rpm while my tach reads a little over a 1000 at idle. i guess ill change it. i get a discount since i work at autozone so i know what im doin this weekend.

Normally my dad would do it (Im still learning all this stuff) but he is a 10 hour drive right now and won't be back anytime soon. So, Im trying to find out how much it REALLY cost and how long it REALLY takes to do so when I get someone to do it I won't get ripped off. I really need it done asap because now the car sometimes doesn't want to start. The most complex fix I have done myself is replace the supercharger which is relativity easy and I hear the crank position sensor is a bit of a ***** to do so I don't think Im going to attempt it myself.

its really not THAT hard if you have all the tools. you take the front passenger tire off to get to the crank pulley. the hardest part is probably getting the crank pulley nut loose without turning the crankshaft itself. some people clamp down the torque converter, some people use an impact wrench on it. you'll also need a "harmonic balancer puller" which is free to borrow from autozone and maybe other auto parts stores too

Just wondering why if the crankshaft position sensor has gone bad why wouldn't I get a check engine light? I scanned it with a OBDll anyways but nothing comes up. If that sensor is bad shouldn't a code come up?

if it died completely youd get an SES, but they dont die like that. they go intermittent and work on and off.

While I was going to buy a crank position sensor the check engine light came on so I scanned it and it said “crankshaft position sensor” It's nice to know you guys were right and know what you’re talking about. Thanks
