drivers side axle

Can't get it out 90 degree pry bar 5 pound hammer I replaced it last month brand new and its got a small gash in the boot so going to swap it with a new one again....cardone. Refuses to come out though.

36" wrecker bar should do it with hammering...is something else going on? MY2001 gtp
Decided to tear the passenger side off too took 10 minutes, the drivers side is going on 6 hours starting to mark up the case pretty good though :-(
Last ditch effort I cut the inner boot off to put visegrips on the cup so I can pull it, still can't get it. I can feel it move about 1/4 of an inch in and out but can not get it to pass that
damn c-clip, what am I missing?

And now the side cover is leaking fluid, guess a 60 dollar axle just cost me a transmission...this is so fun.

Get a slide hammer, then get

By prying on it, your just gonna break something. You got the rotor knuckle removed right?

Ya I got everything clear, it looks like I made a small crack form on the side of the case cover right where its rounded out beside the halfshaft, so I am debating weither I need to drop the transmission to replace that cover or if I should drain the trans and just epoxy it since its not a stress part *short of being pryed on* where do I get one of those?

C-clips will not come out with just force, they need to be "popped" out. Quick, strong force. Simple prying on the CV shaft usually won't get it out.

The tool lawngoose posted above work well.

Use the axle puller listed above.
I went through this a month ago 60 buxs rented from autozone (get back) and the axled popped out with in seconds with it.

Took at most 15-20 min from start to finish (car back on ground) with the right tools.

To think it took Josh,Bryan and Myself hours to get the axles out a couple of years ago.. Imagine if we just had one of these. Going to do mine soon will pick up the tool to save the headache.

Thats the funny thing I guess I got lucky the first time last month lol.

I went and got a slide hammer and that attachment, 10 minutes in and still not off I will let you know but damn this thing is on there.

It is the cardone axle. The stock ones come off pretty easily. But the cardone ones seem to be a pain to everyone that uses them. Not to mention how many times boots crack, joints go, all at low miles.

You best bet is not to use them and stick with quality axles.

I wonder when you put it on if its for some reason not sitting flush in there and its actually wedged in.

Well hell must have froze over, I got it off. but I am ashamed at something I thought I would never do..

I wish I had known about the cardone I went to oreilly and bought 2 new ones hrm...

anyway long story short I actually put jb weld on my tranny case where that tiny seeping was coming from, well I should say I drained the trans cleaned it up scuffed it up then put it on there. If it still leaks I guess I will drop the transmission and try to get a new cover plate for that end. I feel like an idiot, thats why you should never work on a car right after a surgery. friday I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled then the halfshaft went on my way home.

You are right though that factory halfshaft popped right off, thats the only reason I kept prying on it, didn't think it was cause it was a cardone axle that it wasn't going to come off just as well.

Thats odd, we have used the A1 Cardones for years with no issues. Have some ready to go on the car. Guess I need to rethink that...

I appreciate the help though 2 hour job turned 3 day job lol.

I just hope that epoxy holds and I can go onto the next issue *my other car* lol.

Do your own research on the forums (here and cgp), but from what I have seen, a lot of guys have issues with cardone axles. I replaced a stock one of mine couple years ago and got a used GM axle from Morad. Thing looked perfect and has been working well ever since. GM axles are known to be much stronger than most aftermarket axles. Especially cardone.

But like I said, don't take my word for it. Do your own research.

Well I have to say I bought that left front brand new and it had a small split in the boot when I looked at it the other day which is what started this whole ordeal. Well actually the passenger side one clunking at 70mph on my way home started it but me noticing the tiny spot of grease on the new one really snowballed this job down hill quick. So I hope thats not a reflection of the quality and that it was just a flux that a month old boot was gashed ever so slightly. Looked like it may have got cut when the clamp was put on, so either way double check the boots before you install them.

Ya thats what I did too after i got that one off warranty or not I don't want to have to rip them off anytime soon again lol.

Now I just hope the timing chain on my saab 9-5 goes smoother gonna hit the 200,000 mark soon. be good for another 200k
