Hello everyone. I took my 2008 Pontiac GP 3800 to a GM service dept to have the P0106 and P0420 codes checked out and they claim I need a MAP sensor $93.00, Map sensor system cleaning $200.94, a EGR system cleaning $200.94 and a Fuel injector cleaning $139.00 which will cost over $700 bucks! I think they are trying to pull one over on me. Has anyone ever had problems with these codes?? Please let me know what you think... Your help would be most appreciated...

you can get that $93 MAP sensor off ebay for $13. bad o2 sensors can give a p0420 code. I would change both o2 sensors and the MAP sensor, you can get all 3 for less than $60 on ebay. . As for cleaning everything run some SeaFoam thru it and start using Lucas gas treatment.

I wouldn't get any of that stuff on ebay if it was my car. Get the stuff from Rockauto or Partsgeek. And don't ever take your car to a dealer, they will charge you for everything and anything they can.

They told you that you need to replace AND clean the MAP sensor? That's a good one.

When I have P0420 it was a bad cat. I changed it right meow and all was good.

Sounds like you need a map sensor, Costs about 40$ from amazon and is a 5 min job to replace. The other code could be one of a few things, Could be a bad rear o2, could be a bad front o2, could be a bad cat, could be a aftermarket cat not doing enough as far as your engine computer is concerned. Personally? I would replace the front o2 if it is more then 60k miles or 5 years old and then do the non fouler trick on the rear o2. You don't need a o2 sensor to tell you when your cat is going bad. Trust me you will know because your car will not go over X mph. Also ignore all of that cleaning bull****.

Thanks for the info. The car only has 52,000 miles on it so i will start first with replacing the Map sensor and see if the code clears. My car is driving fine and my gas mileage is still the same

Don't cheap out on the MAP sensor. Go OEM. I got mine at NAPA for about $90 something and installed it at the stealership parking lot cuz they wanted to charge well over $300 to switch it out (I got ran off the lot for doing work on the premises haha). My mistake was getting a cheapy one from Oreilly's and I never would have guessed it was the MAP sensor. They diagnosed it for me though.

Clean the old map and check the cable first before buying a new one. There's guide on safe cleaning but dirt or dead bug stuck on the map can throw bad map. Check the intake air filter if it was dirty map.

What problems was your car giving you other than the check engine light staying on? Actually I am not having any mechanical problems right now my car still drives fine.
