I have a '01 Grand Prix with a blown motor and I'm about to drop a '97 motor in it's place. My question: Is there anything that needs to be switched such as the coil pack, the computer or anything else I may encounter in the swap.

You'll need to use your 01 wiring harness and computer. Not sure if any sensors have to be switched over but other than that the motor should just be a drop in replacement
Thanks for the reply OH4CompG. The Sensors are what I'm concerned about... hoping it's Plug and Play. I'm sure I'll find out once it's dropped in.![]()
Would help if you told us what you drive.. NA/Sc etc.
Swap your TB and alternator bracket on to the new motor. Beyond that you should be ok. Evap might be located in a different place. If so..move/swap it.
Sorry BillBoost37... I should have been more detailed... it's a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, no supercharge, my mistake for not including that information. Thank you for your reply ... it is greatly appreciated.
Given its NA you should be ok with just the Throttlebody, engine harness, alt bracket, and possibly the ICM (coils are the same but I think 01 started using a grounding point on the bottom of the module bracket, look into that).
As long as it is a GP motor you will be fine. If it out of a Bonneville you will need to remove the front mount and front cover as the engine mounts are in different places. Learned that one first hand![]()
I work at a GM Dealership in parts... I CAN look it up individually, but I refuse to do so.
Unless the OP asks me to.
I just know when I got my replacement L67 it was out of a Bonnie and there was quite a bit to be changed over and replaced, but I wanted it done right so I dropped the $$$ to do it that way.
OP.. Do what I said in my post. Don't swap the engine harness. I have no ideaSheffer is suggesting that for. That would cause you a pile of issues because a 97 and 01 harness are totally different. To reiterate and add one thing.
Assuming GP motor to GP motor swap:
Swap TB to your original one
Swap Alt bracket/tensioner assembly to your original one
Swap Alt to your original one
Swap your fuel rail and injectors onto new motor (plugs are different on the injectors)
Drop it in and you are all set.
If you get a 97 from another body style other than a Regal or GP, then add this on to the above list.
Remove different mounts and swap yours onto the motor.
Remove the oil filter adapter (it'll be different) and use yours.
Change the rear exhaust manifold to your original one
Swap the flex plate from your original to the new motor (H/C/G bodies used a 258mm for NA)
Rico: Yes, Riv and Park mounts are different. Parks also had two different mounts. You will hate the 9?-98 PA mount and like the 99+ PA mount. Same body.. different mounts. Riv is fun if you have to do belts. The design doesn't give you enough room to pull out the spacer w/o lowering the engine a bit. Many owners cut the spacer in half to sneak it out as two pieces in the future. 92-99 LeSlopper and Bonneville shared mounts. After that, I'm not positive about the Slopper.
Again BillBoost37 I apologize that my original posting was about as clear as mud! The motor I'm putting in my GP is out of a 97 GP GT, no SC either. It's a complete motor with the 6 month old ALT still attached, as are the Hoses and Rails.
... Bill... tsk tsk. You pull a blown 01 motor out, you drop in a 97 motor to replace, you change the parts over, you swap fuel rail and injectors but leave the 97 harness and don't swap it??? ...notice where I was going? Injector plugs are different, if you use the 01 injectors you HAVE to swap the engine harness.
Sheffer... Tsk tsk..you've never read the engine swap thread. I don't pull anything that doesn't need to be touched. Meaning..the harness stays in the vehicle. Thppppttt.
I didn't read it because I have my old engine out already and won't be putting it back in for a while, gonna be a fun build but won't start until income tax this next spring. When I get it built up then I will read and probably print it out so I have it in the garage with me haha
