There's a horrible sound on the drivers side of my 02 when you mash the brakes anyone have an idea what it is?

need new brakes? Take a video and that would help out tremendously. It's hard to diagnose sounds over the internet with descriptions.

When you say 'mash the brakes' does that mean pushing them as hard as possible, or just normal braking?

Also, this horrible noise, what does it sound like? Is it a single thunk or thud, is it constant?? High pitched, low pitched, does it last as long as the brakes are held?

When you hit the brakes, can you feel the brake pedal pulse a little, and the steering wheel wobble?

Normal braking. It is as long as the brakes are held and sounds like grinding and you can feel it in the brakes and steering wheel. Also the passenger can feel it with there feet on the floor.

You need to change your brakes seems like your padding on your brakes is all gone now instead of rubber its metal on metal to stop the car.

I had that happen once, turned out to be a cat clinging the strut/coil spring assembly, he was ok and let go, but
    GAWD what an awful sound.
    Did you look under there?

well lets go this way, were the brakes squeaking a lot for the last month, and now are grinding?

the squeaking is was the squealers hitting the rotors to tell you, you need new brakes, you let that go, and now you need new rotors and pads.

stop driving the car if you are still driving it, as the metal on metal pad action dont last long, and you will be eating your caliper piston soon, and or have a major failure on your hands.

take a tire off and inspect your brakes asap. if you can see through your wheel the rotor should be nice and smooth, no groves cut into it.

My brake pads are fine we just replaced all of the brake pads and there is no squeaking or grinding of the brake pads.

Well if it only happens during braking, then I'd reckon that either the front right pads were not put on correctly (somehow), there's a defect with the pad, or the rotor is in need of replacement.

by chance did you clean and re grease the sliders? one could be sticking causing noise.

You did the rear pads as well?
Warped rear rotors will (believe it or not) sound like noise is coming from front of car.
I chased this for a while before finally changing the rear rotors.

I changed all of the pads. How do you tell if they are warped?

warped rotors will make the brake pedal pulse under your foot,( big vibration) and the car will feel like its grabbing and holding off and on sorta.

chances are its the front rotors, you can take them off and have them re cut, but i've found over the years, that if warped and then cut, the warp comes back at some point, so i suggest 2 new rotors up front.
