There is no such thing as too many miles.
theres alot to take into account, example my car has 256,699miles. has a 80,000 miles motor in and the body isnt to bad. did i mention its a 97? my buddy got an 04 thats beat to shiat. so its all how the maitnece was done, how well it was taken care of.
Maintenance is key... ask the seller if they have records and or repair history. Car fax is worth it's the $ if you are decided to purchase it, but prior to locking in 100%.
You also have to keep in mind that regardless of how well things have been maintained, that at high mileage there will be things needing replacement so don't freak when you have to do it. Otherwise mileage doesn't mean anything... lol. Usually a well maintained car will present itself without trouble.
Don't forget to check the strut towers and underside rockers and pinch welds for rust.
Those are the biggest things that come to mind, enjoy!
(Just my $.02, any and all can be totally disregarded)
Mine is fine at 210k miles
It all depends like what these guys stated is what maintence has been done to the vehicle. My buddy had a 97 gtp with 275 000 kms which I think would be something like 230 000 miles? I dunno but for sure over 200 000 miles and it ran amazing, sounded great for the year and everything considered. Dirt cheap to buy to and good on insurance. The car needed a few things inside like a window motor on the drivers side but he only paid like a $1000 for it. Im seriously considering now selling my gt for a gtp.
How do you figure that? 1 km is .62 miles (slightly more than half a mile). I've always remembered that 100 kph is 60 mph. According to google, 275,000 km is 170,877 miles. But good effort though lol. Good luck trying to find a rust free 10+ year old car that most people use as a "beater"/daily driver. That's what I bought mine for. But that also depends on the state, looks like the OP is in California. To my knowledge that state doesn't have problems with rust. Most car people end up doing a tuneup and end up replacing damn near everything on the car once they get it anyway.
I just bought my GP 2 weeks ago with 231XXX on the clock. It has an engine that supposedly has 60XXX, I kind of doubt it cause it only has 10-15psi oil pressure when hot- but the tranny is original I think and still shifts hard. Other than that, its a norther car so the rockers are rusted to hell.
These cars can hold together for a long time, maintenance is key.
My cars' got 182k. You wouldn't know it by looking at it.
Thanks everyone for advise
I am always happy to give my opinion. High mileage does not scare me. I can't think of the last time and engine needed a rebuild because it was "worn". But...maint is important. No service hisotry pass on the car. Make sure had regular oil changes. The suspension seems to always be the thing that is the problem on high mileage cars. Struts and bearings and bushings wear over time and can be expensive to replace. Also rust. Make sure car is rust free.
Make sure you know what the car needs prior to purchase. Take it to a mechanic and have them test everything. Then subtract that amount from the purchase price. If the seller won't do that, then you can add it to the purchase price and see if you could get a newer, lower mileage GP.
'i just bought mine from a buddy car was haveing problems he couldn't diagnose, clogged cat and broken bbv vacum line 262,000 mile i paid 500.00, little rust in rear strut tower but i have alot of body shop friends and anything is repairable
yeah, 275 miles is less than 200 kms. I find the older gen GP rockers go bad in front of the rear wheel.. On higher K cars, it will be hard to find rust free as Bjorn said. I would say if it has high millage, try to get minimal rust.
If it is rust free, i'd be concerned and find out for paint job or body repairs.
