+1 on what he's saying. I'd make sure there's no play in anything first just in case. But it really sounds like a rack and pinion noise. 04's had a tsb where they pretty much always made that noise by 120k. But any rack can go bad.

No it would be a lot more than that. It depends on what route you go. Some go to a junk yard and test their luck and do it themselves. If it's fine they get by with around $80. Labor alone is pricey, probably $250 plus the part, which you can get new, reman, or used.
