My 2001 has 98K miles, mostly driven city miles. How do you determine if it's time to replace the front struts? Front end seems firm when given the bounce test. You can really feel it when going over even mild potholes and bumps. Any comments? Thanks

Open the the hood and bouncy the car and see if the strut mounts move up or down at all. If not they are probably ok yet. Mine are junk now at 150k.

well, you'll probably know if it needs them just by driving it. If you feel like the ride quality has gone down alot then you definitely need them, I did mine at about 130k...If you are still on the originals then its safe to say that it's time for some new ones.

Outside of mounts or spring isolators going bad (as 01GTP refers to), if you are getting a slight floaty response after going over a dip, pothole or anything else that moves the springs, then its time. Having said that, my '99 went over 100k miles without a need for struts while my '05 needed them at 70k miles. Same roads so quality is going down. The bounce test is a gross "see, I told you so" type of test and your handling actually starts suffering when that float starts creeping in.

the float is terrible.
I have the float and i'm around 85 K miles.
Its not bad but its there.
Since you mention city miles... chances are you need new struts.
